Paul Ryan Refuses to Revise His Position on Rape, Abortion: VIDEO

Think Progress takes note of the important point to come out of the Akin controversy:

Ryan and Akin cosponsored a “personhood” bill that would not only prohibit rape survivors from seeking an abortion, but would likely treat terminating a pregnancy that results from rape as a homicide crime. Similarly, Ryan and Akin partnered on a bill seeking to prevent Medicaid recipients who are raped from obtaining an abortion unless they are victims of “forcible rape.”

Yesterday, Ryan was asked about his positions:

In an interview with a local Pittsburgh television station yesterday, Ryan was given the opportunity to revise his position now that he is half of the Republican Party’s national ticket. He refused:

QUESTION: Should abortions to be available to women who are raped?

RYAN: Well, look, I’m proud of my pro-life record. And I stand by my pro-life record in Congress. It’s something I’m proud of. But Mitt Romney is the top of the ticket and Mitt Romney will be president and he will set the policy of the Romney administration.

AFA Hate Group Leader Bryan Fischer: Todd Akin is the Rape Victim - VIDEO

Bryan Fischer, never one to miss a chance to paint a right-wing oppressor as a victim, does the same with Todd Akin, Right Wing Watch reports:

After likening the backlash to Todd Akin’s comments on “legitimate rape” to the Pharisees’ persecution of Jesus, American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer is now comparing Akin to a victim of rape. After listing the growing chorus of conservative activists and media personalities who have called on Akin to quit the senate race, Fischer lamented that “everybody is gang tackling Todd Akin.” “You talk about a forcible situation, you talk about somebody being a victim of forcible assault, that would be Todd Akin,” Fischer maintained.

Pat Robertson, too, is rushing to Akin's defense.

Rep. Todd Akin Says He'll Continue Senate Bid: AUDIO

AkinRep. Todd Akin will ignore Republican calls for him to quit his race for U.S. Senate. He tells Mike Huckabee that he'll continue on.

Said Akin: "We are going to continue with this race for U.S. Senate."

Interview, AFTER THE JUMP...

UPDATE: The National Republican Senatorial Committee says it will not support him.

“This is undoubtedly a difficult time for Congressman Akin, but the stakes in this election are far bigger than any one individual.  By staying in this race, Congressman Akin is putting at great risk many of the issues that he and others in the Republican Party are fighting for, including the repeal of ObamaCare.

“It should not be lost on anyone that some of the only voices not calling for Congressman Akin to do the right thing and step aside are Claire McCaskill and the leaders of the pro-abortion movement.   Senator McCaskill knows that the only way she wins re-election is if Todd Akin is her opponent in November.
“We continue to hope that Congressman Akin will do the right thing for the values he holds dear, but there should be no mistake – if he continues with this misguided campaign, it will be without the support and resources of the NRSC.”

In related news, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) joined him earlier today in sending Republicans off a cliff:

King told an Iowa reporter he’s never heard of a child getting pregnant from statutory rape or incest.

“Well I just haven’t heard of that being a circumstance that’s been brought to me in any personal way,” King told KMEG-TV Monday, “and I’d be open to discussion about that subject matter.”

A Democratic source flagged King’s praise of Akin in the KMEG interview to TPM. But potentially more controversial for King is his suggestion that pregnancies from statutory rape or incest don’t exist or happen rarely.

Kirk Cameron: 'I Respect' Todd Akin — VIDEO

Former child star turned right-wing religious activist Kirk Cameron defended Todd Akin in a CNN appearance this morning:

“He clearly is a pro-life advocate, and for that, I respect him...He said that he misspoke and that he misphrased something and that he apologized...I’m the kind of person that believes that I would like to be evaluated by my entire career and my entire life, not two words that I would misspeak and then later apologize for,” he said. “So he’s in a tough spot.”

In related news, Paul Ryan made a "not brief" call to Akin yesterday. Didn't stop him from putting his video out though.

Piers Morgan Stares at Todd Akin's Empty Chair, Calls Him a 'Gutless Little Twerp': VIDEO

Rep. Todd Akin canceled on Piers Morgan last night, but Morgan had his chair on anyway:

"Congressman, you have an open invitation to join me in that chair whenever you feel up to it, because if you don't keep your promise to be on the show, then you are what we would call in Britain a gutless little twerp."

Todd Akin Begs for Forgiveness for Rape Remarks in New Ad: VIDEO

Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) begs for forgiveness in a new ad released overnight that appears to be an effort to save his Senate campaign which he is being encouraged to quit from nearly every corner of his own party.

Says Akin in the spot: "Rape is an evil act. I used the wrong words in the wrong way and for that I apologize. As the father of two daughters, I want tough justice for predators. I have a compassionate heart for the victims of sexual assault. I pray for them. The fact is, rape can lead to pregnancy. The truth is, rape has many victims. The mistake I made was in the words I said, not in the heart I hold. I ask for your forgiveness."

Politico adds that Akin is still ahead 44-43 over Claire McCaskill in a poll taken this week after his remarks: "Akin's image problem may take a toll on his head-to-head numbers against McCaskill at some point, but it hasn't yet, and data like this is unlikely to leave Akin convinced that this is a race he can't win."

Akin's weekend remarks about rape have permeated the news cycle. Said the congressman on a radio show:

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

The remarks have proven a nightmare for Republican candidates, eager to remove Akin from the spotlight because the incident casts light on their own poor records on women's issues.
