The NYT explores handholding, and notes that “sexual health educators say it is a much-discussed topic among gay students who now publicly hold hands more than ever before but still must consider whether they want to declare their sexuality.”
I remember, in 1992, in the early days of one of my first gay romances, deciding that we’d walk down conservative Newbury Street in Boston hand-in-hand, with the intent to shock passers-by. And how terrifying that simple act felt. Yet how liberating it felt when we did, in fact, turn heads. The major victory however, occurred when at one point we actually elicited a gasp.
