Australia's High Court is hearing a case between the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) which has legalized same-sex marriage, and the Commonwealth, which seeks to strike down the law.
In the meantime, the High Court is allowing the first same-sex marriages to take place, starting this Saturday. More than 50 couples are expected to marry this weekend.
The Commonwealth argues that the ACT's same-sex marriage law is inconsistent with the federal marriage act, which defines marriage as between a man and a woman. The ACT is arguing that its law can sit comfortably alongside the federal marriage act, as a different kind of marriage.
