On Sunday's Last Week Tonight host John Oliver discussed Canada's elections–which happen today!–and why Americans should care about the political goings on of our neighbors to the north.
Oliver outlined a long list of reasons why the Canadian election matters and why Americans should care about its outcome, chief among them being that you would care if your neighbor started dating “a complete and utter dickhead.” Oliver refers to the possibility that Canada could reelect its current prime minister Stephen Harper, whom he adamantly opposes for “pandering to Islamophobes” among other less highfalutin reasons. Oliver then points out a ridiculous Canadian election law that makes it illegal for non-Canadian citizens to attempt and influence a Canadian election–violation of which can result in six months of jail time or a $5,000 (Canadian) fine.
