A new trailer has been released for the upcoming Sherlock special, The Abominable Bride, revealing what we can expect in this between-seasons mini-feature. Benedict Cumberbatch returns to the role of famed detective Sherlock Holmes alongside Martin Freemon as Dr. Watson. But this time the intrigue takes place in Victorian London (the era in which the original Sherlock stories were written) rather than present day.
As for how and why the series is jumping back to the story's point of origin, creator Steven Moffat said,
“[We did this] just because we can, really,” he said. “We said, ‘Could we maybe do one scene or a dream sequence?' Then we said why don't we just do it? We never bothered explaining why he's in modern day London. Why explain why we're in Victorian [London]?”
As /Film reports, the special will be a ghost story and will debut on TV in the US and the UK on January 1, 2016. That's the first time the show has debuted simultaneously in the States and in Britain. The special will also get a theatrical release, arriving in theaters on January 5 and January 6. The theatrical version will include “20 minutes of extra footage including a guided set tour and a making-of featurette.”
