“Is the idea of living an out life…just a western idea?” That's the question that couple Jenni Chang and Lisa Dazols set out to answer in their TED Talk looking at what life is like for LGBT people around the world.
Branching outside their bubble of the Bay Area in California, Chang and Olson went across the globe in search of “Supergays”, what they define as LGBT people who were doing something extraordinary in the world. They wondered whether they would be able to find these individuals in every nation they went to, especially nations where homosexuality is illegal. Yet regardless of country or continent, the pair found Supergays working to advance the cause of LGBT equality.
Just as significantly, Chang and Olson found that the desire for equality was the same in every nation. Said Chang,
“Yes, there are still tragedies that happen on the bumpy road to equality. And let's not forget that 75 countries still criminalize homosexuality today. But there are still stories of hope and courage in every corner of the world. What we ultimately took away from our journey is equality is not a western invention.”
