Davey Wavey recently got to meet a mermaid–but not just any mermaid, a gay mermaid.
Blix — aka Eric when he's walking around on those whadda ya call 'em? Oh, feet — talked with Davey about his experience being a mer-person. Identifying as a gay mermaid, Blix told Davey, “I eat, sleep, breathe and s— mermaids. My family knew I was a mermaid for a very long time.”
Being a mer-person taught Blix to “be free”, he says, and “not to care what anyone thinks. Be like the ocean, just be free, and follow your own current.”
Blix also says he has experienced racist backlash when he tells people he sees himself as a mermaid. Pointing out that depictions of black mermaids are virtually non-existent, Blix notes, “Every mermaid you see has got blonde hair and blue eyes, I've even had kids tell me, ‘My friends say I can't be a mermaid because I'm black', and I'm like, ‘No babydoll, that should make you want to be one!'”
Blix's godmother has been hugely supportive of him and makes tails for him out of silicone using clay molds.
“People thought I was crazy when I started making these. I lost a lot of friends actually,” she explains. However, seeing the happiness they give her godson inspires her to keep making them.
Watch as Davey tries on a tail of his own and goes for a swim with Blix, below.
