road.jpg Scientists discover origin of third of three strains of HIV known to infect humans: "Of the three strains of HIV known to infect humans, we know that two - the one causing the global AIDS epidemic and another that has infected a small number of people in Cameroon - came from a chimpanzee virus called SIV. The source of the third strain, which infects people in western central Africa, was a mystery. Now we know it came from gorillas."

DiMasi and opponents of proposed Massachusetts gay marriage ban are mobilizing forces to kill it: "Legislative sources said that DiMasi is pushing to get enough votes to force today's convention to recess without taking final action on the amendment, a move that, if successful, would kill the proposal and prevent it from appearing on the 2008 state ballot."

road.jpg Meryl Streep's wise decisions via Page Six: "Donny Osmond brought down the house when he coaxed Nathan Lane onstage and sang him a love song from 'Beauty and the Beast' at the Christopher Reeve Foundation fund-raiser at the Marriott Marquis the other night. Lane, playing Belle to Osmond's Beast, deadpanned, 'My God, I thought you were Mormon!' Then, as Meryl Streep, Barbara Walters, Joan Collins and Miss USA Tara Conner watched, Osmond pulled Lane onto his knee for a mock marriage proposal. Streep, who'd earlier been asked to play Belle, told the crowd she'd made many important decisions in her career, and 'not being part of that skit was one of them.'"

  1. Lest anyone jump the gun, misinterpret Meryl's statement and start criticizing her as a homophobe, just remember her acceptance speech for her role in 'Angels in America'. It was at a point where the debate over gay marriage had reached a fever pitch and W. was beating the drums loudly over the need to pass the Federal Marriage Amendment. At the same time, Shrub was also making lots of noise over the problem of steroids in baseball. Streep accepted her award, leaned into the microphone and said, "I just want to say that I don't think the two biggest problems in America are that too many people want to commit their lives to one another until death do us part and steroids in sport. I don't think those are our two biggest problems." God love Meryl. I sure do.

  3. And speaking on the Britney pics.. if you go to trent's blog you can see Britney's old manager Larry Rudolph in the far left of the first photo.

Here's hoping that she had the sense to re-hire him so she can get her career back on track. After all the bashing she endured I'm almost enclined to root for her success.

  7. Meryl's comment is hilarious! She's an insanely talented, prolific and witty individual.

Love the pic of the New Addams Family. I didn't know there was another flick coming out!

Ed Bradley, indeed Cory, RIP, a class act.

Britney v Kevin...for the love of GOD make it stop. In two days they are again EVERYWHERE. And why float Britney??? She is as equally untalented and irrelvant as her soon to be Ex.

  8. Peterparker

I viewed Streep's statement as meaning it was such a great scene that she was glad she hadn't agreed to be part of it because otherwise it would never have occured...that her not agreeing to be part of it brought it happening the way it did.

  9. I took it the same way Jimmy, as a self-deprecating comment. Meryl is a class act all around.

  10. I loathed rick santorum...and his ignorant, insulting views. But,speaking as a gay parent, kids are off limits. Some of the comments on other sites/blogs sites are really demeaning to his kids. We can't always help who our parents are (ask my sons...or me!) but lets be fair and place our anger where it belongs. Rick...BYE BYE!!

  12. Jimmyboyo and Daniel...I thought Meryl's statement seemed open ended enough that people who aren't familiar with her might misinterpret...I don't want Ms. Meryl to be misunderstood!

  13. Smart, sexy and effortlessly cool, Ed Bradley was jazz personified - a great journalist and an outstanding role model who lived his life well - they don't seem to make 'em like him any more.

  14. Agree with Malcolm. Yes, Santorum is loathsome but kids are off-limits. Enjoying his daughter's obvious distress or commenting on his children's appearance is just beyond the pale. It was horrible when Repukes did it to Chelsea Clinton. We are better than that.

  15. We are thrilled to report that Massachusetts legislators today soundly rejected one constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, and recessed the Constitutional Convention until January, thereby effectively derailing a proposed ballot measure which would have ended marriage equality in Massachusetts.

By taking this action, the Legislature sided with the majority of people in Massachusetts who believe that marriage equality is good for families and communities and that it's time to move on to more pressing matters.

In addressing two proposed constitutional amendments that would have stripped away marriage rights for same-sex couples, legislators overwhelmingly defeated the first by a 196 to 0 vote. They then moved to end the debate altogether, thereby effectively terminating our opponents' drive to put a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage on the 2008 November ballot. That vote was 109 to 87.

We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the many courageous legislators who took a principled stand to stop these discriminatory amendments. They took an historic vote that honors and protects the more than 8,500 married same-sex couples and their families. We especially want to single out the leadership of House Speaker Sal DiMasi, who was relentless in his defense of marriage equality today.
