Richard Curtis, Cody Castagna, and Gay Extortion in Spokane

After several days of investigation, Spokane police have determined that Cody Castagna, the young man and part-time porn actor who allegedly attempted to extort money from former Washington state Rep. Richard Curtis, was part of a larger group of men who formed an extortion ring. Curtis, who resigned as a legislator last week following the release of a sordid police report, was apparently their latest target.

Davenport_2KOMO TV reports: "According to police reports, the [Castagna and Curtis] went to the Davenport Hotel. There, Curtis claims, the 26-year-old stole his wallet and demanded $1,000. Curtis said he only had $200, which he left at the hotel's front desk. Police said Castagna may be part of a larger group that targets gay men for extortion. In Curtis' case, the group designated a flower pot at a Spokane part (ed: I believe they mean "park") as the drop-off point for the remaining $800. Detectives believe the group has done this before. 'There were multiple threats and payoffs,' said Sgt. Joe Peterson. 'In this instance it seems like it was not the first time and we've been told by other people it's not the first time the suspects have done this type of thing.' Spokane police are releasing few details and said at least three different people are involved, including Castagna's cousins. They urge any other victims of extortion to contact Spokane police."

Police released a surveillance photo (above) which they say shows a friend of Castagna's who took part in the extortion entering the Davenport hotel to receive the envelope with Curtis' cash in it. The man then left the hotel with the money.

Dan Savage, writing for the Seattle paper The Stranger took a fascinating trip to Spokane to retrace Richard Curtis' steps, stayed at the Davenport Towers (photo, above right) , and ended up visiting a gay bar where he ran into none other than Cody Castagna. It's a must read.

Writes Savage: "I find myself feeling bad for Curtis. What a sad and solitary figure. He couldn't risk staying at the same hotel with the rest of the GOP colleagues, lest they spot him coming and going with young thugs. So he slunk off to the soulless Davenport Tower alone, before slipping into the Hollywood Erotic Boutique alone, before heading to the Northwest Quest Casino alone, before heading back to his hotel to have sex with a man whose name he didn't know—a man who thought he was a freak."

That's what Castagna told him when he ran into him at gay bar Dempsey's: "Richard Curtis is a freak. A big, gay freak."

  1. Yep, sexuality comes in more than two flavors, kids. Dan, as usual, is absolutely brilliant. That really is a "must-read". LMAO.

  2. Whoops! Correction: more than FOUR flavors...

  3. Bareback sex with strangers and all this running around seems like a LOT of risk/work for an extortion "ring" to get only $1000.

  4. This whole thing was beyond freaky, but, the details were a HOOT! These married men who troll for sex are some of the most ridiculously sad people on earth, and, scary when in office. And, anytime you pay, you are a fool,at least to me you are. And, then there is the thing about his being bottom and thinking he was a woman, and, then top and thinking he was heterosexual, no wonder they are so confused and racked with self hate!

  5. My god, what a fascinating article by Savage. Really makes you think.

  6. Wow, there should be a warning about how long that article is! I must demure on the autogynephilia theory though. These researchers need to do arousal studies rather than just armchair it. Likewise, would not a heterosexual man want to have sex with a women, and therefore would not an autogynephiliac want to have a sex with a women dressed as a man? He might also have transgender fantasies. I'd have assumed that Curtis was confused about what being a gay man was all about when he went trolling for sex.

  7. Thank You, ANON, I'm not crazy about sex researchers. They make up shit. T

He man was a closeted bisexual who had an obsession with cross-dressing--problem was he wanted male sex partners while cross-dressing--which is HOMO. Many hetero cross-dressers do it with their wives, girlfriends or female prostitutes, don't they? Homo cross-dressers do it with other men present(and participating, of course). Curis risked everything for his obsession. He lost. But his loss should mean nothing to gay people because didn't give a shit about us.

As great as Savage's article was it was another attempt to separate transfolk from "gay". When y'all go to Gay Pride festivities next summer, look around and see how many transfolk are there, will ya'?

  8. I agree that the "autogynephilia" diagnosis is foolish. He's a guy and he wanted to have sex with a guy. That is homosexual by definition. I don't care if he might be "imagining" that he's a woman. We all have a lot of wild fantasies going on in our heads during sex, but these "researchers" sound like they are going out of their way to justify a gay guy calling himself straight.

I'm sometimes jealous of women because they can get fucked by a dick without lube and without "cleaning out" in preparation. But I'm still full on gay!

    "jealous of women"

Sometimes I enjoyed the preparation process more than I did the main act. (Is that another case of Derrick's TMI? Oh, so what.)

yeah, but back in the day when I was whorin' with the trade, I used to ask them,"what's the difference between couchee and booty (we used different words then). Most trade told me that with couchee, "you can move around more." So, I guess we're tighter, GREGG. Well, you are. I've probably grown loose with age...but still mellow a fine wine.

  10. But, Derrick, I have always thought that "cross dressers" were straight men? This is where I as a gay man am with most of the public when it comes to this, confused.

And, trade, pray be, you too trolled for trade like the good married conservative? Egads, LOL!

  11. The fact that Gregg is experiencing "cleanliness fatigue" is proof that he was brought up right.

  12. Elements of this story will have me confused forever. Is either man being charged with anything? Is Curtis denying that he agreed to pay $1,000 for unsafe sex? If he agreed, it's not extortion...just prostitution.

And the moral is, don't fall asleep when trade have access to your wallet. Use the hotel safe!

  13. Oh, Sebastian, now you know, I didn't have to troll back then. The trade came after me! I was one cute lil' ol' queen...well, I was cute to the trade. The gay guys said, "he shouldn't be like that...if I wanted a woman I'd get a real woman. Why would I want an imitation of..."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, Shut the fuck up...the trade likes me even if you don't", that's what I'd say to them Donna Summer worshipin' bitches.

But that was long ago. The only trade I can get now probably won't have any teeth, the younger ones are all on crack.

  14. I want to join. Erotic! Hope it. Will notice my gay friends. Met them on
