McCain Gay-Baiting in New Romney-Bashing Robo-Call

Mccain_crist

Marc Ambinder at The Atlantic reports on a new robo-call from the McCain campaign in Florida, where he and Romney are doing their best to destroy one another.

This robo-call, Ambinder notes, raises "the specter of scary homosexuals and their 'special rights.'"

The call: "Mitt Romney thinks he can fool us. He supported abortion on demand, even allowed a law mandating taxpayer-funding for abortion. He says he changed his mind, but he still hasn’t changed the law. He told gay organizers in Massachusetts he would be a stronger advocate for special rights than even Ted Kennedy. Now, it’s something different."

Ambinder notes that it's not clear whether McCain (pictured above with Florida governor Charlie Crist) personally approved the call.

  1. A picture of McCain, a reference to gay baiting, and the inclusion of Charlie Crist...........okay, I can appreciate the irony of that.

  3. I'm no fan of McCain (I'm no Republican for that matter), but I think it's worth pointing out that what the robocall reports is in fact accurate. Romney did make the comment attributed to him about gay civil rights in a debate with Kennedy during his 1994 Senate campaign. And it is jus tone example of Romney's very decidedly rightward drift on virtually all social issues since he decided to step on to the national electoral stage.

I'm not sure whether Ambinder used the term "gay-baiting," but it's misused here in two ways.

One, baiting means to entice, and in this sense it is generally understood to mean enticement by means of falsehood or trickery. As I said, the charges made in the call are true.

Two, it's not gays that are being baited, but people who are motivated to vote by opposition to laws that would protect gay people's rights. So strictly speaking, what McCain (or his campaign) is doing is "conservative-voter-baiting with gay-related messages."

  4. Well, it is rather disingenuous to demand that Romney change the law when he's not governor anymore. And even if he was still in office, the Massachusetts legislature is, what, 80% Democratic?

  5. Funny McCain backed the gay bashing propositon on his home states ballot and the voters smacked it down, you would think he would have learned his lesson. But, at his advanced age and loss of motor and memory functions, I guess it was bound to happen that he would be bashing away again, any lie to win.

  6. I read this quote when it came out, and I didn't immediately think of gay-bashing... I still don't, sorry. It is definitely not gay-fuzzy, or gay-warm. To me the quote shows what a pandering politician baseballMitt Romney is, and to an extent McCain... But no hold barred gay bashing? Nah.

  7. "it's not clear whether McCain personally approved the call."

Interesting how you provide cover for McCain like that but did no such thing for Hillary.

  8. It's now confirmed that the calls did indeed come from the McCain campaign:
