Rush Limbaugh and Michael Steele Battle for Republican Power

RNC Chair Michael Steele caved to Rush Limbaugh after calling him "ugly and incendiary" on CNN Saturday night for remarks that he wanted Obama to fail. D.L. Hughley called Limbaugh the de facto leader of the Republican party to which Steele snapped back, "No, he's not."

Limbaugh Limbaugh quickly fired back: "Why are you running the Republican Party? Why do you claim you lead the Republican Party when you seem obsessed with seeing to it that President Obama succeeds? I frankly am stunned that the chairman of the Republican National Committee endorses such an agenda."

Late yesterday, Steele told Politico that he "reached out" to Limbaugh:

"My intent was not to go after Rush – I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh.I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. … There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership. It was one of those things where I thinking I was saying one thing, and it came out differently. What I was trying to say was a lot of people … want to make Rush the scapegoat, the bogeyman, and he’s not. I’m not going to engage these guys and sit back and provide them the popcorn for a fight between me and Rush Limbaugh. No such thing is going to happen."

Steele Steele continued: "I wasn’t trying to slam him or anything. He brings a very important message to the American people to wake up and pay attention to what the administration is doing. Number two, there are those out there who want to look at what he’s saying as incendiary and divisive and ugly. That’s what I was trying to say. It didn’t come out that way. … He does what he does best, which is provoke: He provokes thought, he provokes the left. And they’re clearly the ones who are most excited about him. I wasn’t trying to offend anybody. So, yeah, if he’s offended, I’d say: Look, I’m not in the business of hurting people’s feelings here. … My job is to try to bring us all together."

Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming, a member of the GOP whip team, appears to fear the wrath of Limbaugh as well. In an interview with David Schuster, Barrasso refused to criticize Limbaugh for saying he wants Obama to fail.

Katie Couric appeared on David Letterman last night. Letterman called him a "bonehead" and asked her, "What about this bonehead Rush Limbaugh? Honest to God, I mean, what is going on there?
He gets up in Washington and he's the keynote speaker at some function and he comes up and he looks like an East European gangster. He's got the black jacket on, the black silk shirt and it's unbuttoned like, oh yeah, when you think Rush Limbaugh, you think, 'Ooh, let's see a little flesh.' Honestly. What is he doing?"

Couric refused to step into the fray, saying, "So much for my interview with Rush."

And Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal told Larry King that he's glad Steele apologized to Limbaugh: "I'm glad he apologized.I think the chairman is a breath of fresh air for the party. As I said before I think Rush is a leader for many conservatives and says things that people are concerned about."

  1. A bunch of Pussies are what the Republicans are.

  2. How anyone could have 'respect' for that fat fucking cretinous pig is beyond me. Is it for the way he chows down on Oxycontin like Tic Tacs, or the fact that he occasionally manages to spew a fragmented sentence along with the gallon of spittle flying out of his gaping maw. What a sickening human being. Just seeing him with that cigar makes me want to cram an apple in his mouth, set his jowls on fire, and watch as this warthog screams. Burn, fucker, BURN.

  3. When a Republican is in the White House, they cry about how important it is for the American people to get behind their president. Get a Democrat in there and they talk about how it's their "duty" to hope the president fails, because they fundamentally disagree with his policies. The hypocrisy is so transparent.

  4. Yet another Republican who cut off his balls and handed them to the junkie/food addict. Rush is one of the most unpopular figures in America. I hope the GOP enjoys his leadership.

  5. Rush is unAmerican for wanting our President to fail at such an important time in our country's history. Hopefully the rest of our country-mates will see that.

  6. Republicans need to step up and work with the White House and Pres Obama to fix the wrongs of the last 8 years! As the old adage says, "You are either a solution to the problem or the problem itself!" Where were these speakers when over the last 8 years America was crashing and burning at a rate unseen before? Where were the complainers when Bush signed over 750 Billion for the Bank Bailout and no one criticized it BUT now everyone in the GOP is pissing and moaning about Pres Obama's bailout money which will help states and local governments as well as the citizens who need the assistance...... So for the GOP - it's ok when you bailout public companies and help stockholders BUT not good when it's the average Joe?? As for Rush L - please if that's the best face the GOP can put forth then more power to them! Noticeably absent were McCain, Palin and Gov Jindal and why?? The GOP HATES LOSERS!! Here in MA if a member of the GOP loses an election they literally disapear into obscurity!!

  7. You can thank Bill Clinton for stripping the fairness doctrine and allowing blow hards like Rush to dominate the airwaves.
He should be in jail for doctor shopping, yet he keeps spewing his hate on hundreds of stations daily. He is a bad person.

  8. It's nauseating watching the GOP leadership form an orderly line to kiss the old homophobic bigots elephantine ass.

  9. Geeez what did Steele do..? He must have called Rush and said " Im sorry Massa'" ...what an asshole Steele is to suck up to this parasite ..Limbaugh needs to have a coronary and Croke already!

  10. Why are self-loathing closet homosexuals like Rush Limbaugh so drawn to the republican party?

Posted by: Olive Yurdich | Mar 3, 2009 11:24:31 AM

  11. Has anyone ever talked to the ex-wives?

    Roxy Maxine McNeely (1977–1980, div.)
    Michelle Sixta (1983–1990, div.)
    Marta Fitzgerald (1994–2004, div.)

Oh I just KNOW they have lot to say about the Oxycontin junkie.

Of course they may have signed a "legal agreement" to keep their traps zipped.

Or they simply may be terrified of winding up dead if they tell what they know.

  13. Michael Steele is a pussy. Rush has those idiots by the balls and they are allowing him to hold as tight as he pleases.

The republican party is FINISHED. Thank God, or Buddha, or whoever.

  14. TY

Clinton isn't perfect (who is?) BUT the fairness doctrine was revoked during the reagan administration 1987

libs were upset with bush's apointment by the supreme court, but they never wished him to fail. They disliked him and even gave him overwhelming support at our moment of crisis 9/11. Bush's support soared to what like 90% post 9/11. Bush DID fail and libs pointed it out and kept hoping he would do something right. When we did we were called traitors, unamerican , and even terrorists sympathizers

Repubs hope Obama fails. They actually are practicing unamerican traitorous ideals and if one visits Free republic and other repub sites one can even see terrorists leanings with talks of shooting him and hoping for his assassination.

Has anyone noticed whatever repubs bitch about is exactly what they are, do, think, etc. pop sych 101=Classic projection

  15. "Why are self-loathing closet homosexuals like Rush Limbaugh so drawn to the republican party?"

Oh, Hell no, Olive! DO NOT throw that fat, misogynistic, megalomaniac onto our side of the fence. The republicans want him and I say let them keep him. Hopefully, there's a coronary or a stroke building up in those arteries that'll end this creep forever.

  16. Ummm...Wow? Glurg, I'm not even surprised by this. Michael Steele had the opportunity to stand up against the "Us v. Them" Mentality, but decided to side with the guy trying to divide America. Bravo, my good sir. Feel free to check your balls at the door.

And would someone PLEASE explain to me how Obama failing would benefit America in any way whatsoever? We are in the middle of a friggin' crisis here, now's REALLY not a good time for this shit.

  17. The Obama Economy: As the Dow keeps dropping, the President is running out of people to blame: Listening to Mr. Obama and his chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, on the weekend, we couldn't help but wonder if they appreciate any of this. They seem preoccupied with going to the barricades against Republicans who wield little power, or picking a fight with Rush Limbaugh, as if this is the kind of economic leadership Americans want.

    Thanks for nuthin', Prez Obama!

Posted by: Impeach The Prez | Mar 3, 2009 12:04:14 PM

  18. This is perfect. Obama has already said Limbaugh is the leader of the Repubs now, and Rahm Emmanuel was on all the Sunday morning shows driving the point home. And now the person who is ACTUALLY supposed to the leader of the Republican party is kissing this fat fuck's ass. You couldn't make it up.

  21. One does not have to *hope* that the President fails; his economic policies already are proven failures: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123604419092515347.html
For two years Obama trash-talked the economy, generating fear in consumers who curtailed their spending, and now he's walked right into failed economy generated in part by his self-fulfilling prohecy, and now further crippled by his 1970s-style economic policies. How's everybody's 401k's doin'? I am sick of hearing the President whine about "inheriting" the problem. If he didn't have a plan to fix the problem and didn't have the ability to fix the problem, then he never should have run for the office.

Posted by: Impeach The Prez | Mar 3, 2009 12:54:46 PM

  22. Watching Rush "fire up" the goons at CPAC reminded me of films of the Third Reich...all young republican Hitler youth looking for someone to blame their life's problems on.

    Posted by: Dave | Mar 3, 2009 1:01:40 PM

  23. DISGUSTED AMERICAN: I don't care who's side you're on, STF up with that "massa" shit!

IMPEACH THE PREZ: I assume your screen name was actually meant for the previous President? Dude, it's too late for that, but, you might be able to get him on war crimes or possibly treason. If that fails, you can always go after Bill Clinton who by the way did the right thing by getting rid of the fairness doctrine.

You don't get to regulate speech in this country. That fat Dominican boy prostitute loving, viagra popping, drug addict Rush has every right to say whatever his disgusting, can't wipe his ass for all of the fat he has to reach around, homphobic self wants to say.

See? Freedom of speech at work.

Warning Towleroaders: Michael Steele is a lying, sniveling asshole. Leave his race out of it.

  25. Um yeah, "Impeach the Prez" the economic crisis is all Obama's fault. Sure he has only been in office for a month or so but asshats like you insist on blaming it on him instead of the giant REPUBLICAN mistake that you helped elect for the last 8 years. Do you really think McCain would be helping the economy right now? The McCain who said the economy was fine and dandy until the shit totally hit the fan? Buy a fucking clue.
