First Look: Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia One-Sheet

Prince

Promotional materials are dribbling out for Prince of Persia, the video game adaptation feature film starring a squeezable but reportedly not juiced Jake Gyllenhaal. The film's still almost a year away.

  1. Whether you love or hate Jake, Disney, Video Games or Princes (and if you hate all four I bet you're *really* fun at parties) I think it's worth noting that it wouldn't have been so long ago that any actor, regardless of how straight they were in real life, would never have been "allowed" or considered to move from a movie as out and explicit (in its theme) as "Brokeback" to any property by Disney whatsoever.
I will take our victories, and thus my optimism, where I can find them -- political or cultural, large or small.
    Cheers!

  2. Uh, Jake Gyllenhaal has done like 794 movies since Brokeback.

  3. He's not gay, and this film looks crap. Why are you posting about this?

Are there no new gay-themed films or films featuring gay actors coming out (so to speak :D)?

Obviously you cannot write about everything homosexual, but this isn't connected to the community AT ALL. In fact, he has repeatedly denied he is gay, as if it is something to be ashamed of.

  4. I really don't get it... couldn't they have found someone who... I don't know... looks Persian?

  5. He doesn't look middle eastern at all...

  6. What's with the High School Musical 3 font?

And, there was an actual Middle Eastern prince in the running for the role, but it's Hollywood, and it's America: had to go with the famous face so the racists don't get any raghead mixed in their action dribble.

  8. My only point is that Disney's corporate brand is mainstream, family oriented, kid-centric, and that it wasn't so long ago that *anyone* with even the whiff if teh gay wouldn't even have been in consideration. Sorry, maybe it's a generational thing, I was actually in the movie theater when "Making Love" came out, and (just as described in "The Celluloid Closet") when the two male leads kissed, in a grainy, soft focus, backlit long shot, people literally jumped up and ran down the aisle as if the theater was on fire.
Yeah, I agree on the caucasion actors in non-caucasion roles point.
The other point still seems noteworthy. TLoad covers all kinds of things.

  9. To be fair, he does actually look a lot like the Prince character from the video game - I'm not saying that makes everything okay, but Jake is at least a good match on that count.

  10. Not exactly edifying.

  11. There's a great image, even better than this poster, at Entertainment Weekly this week.

I just don't believe that any of these guys get this big this fast without "help."

But, as long as I'm just looking at pics and not driving with them on the freeway, I don't really mind.

  12. Jake is as gay as a goose, and he wouldn't have bagged this film without a beard at his side. The 'gay' on Jake is not from Brokeback; it comes from inside, and it took a massive pr campaign and a creepy blonde beard to convince Disney to sign Jake.

Unfortunately the juicy roles are not coming in fast enough to compensate for his diminished stature amongst his peers since he started bearding, but we'll see what happens next year. The gay is still with him, and you'll see it again soon because PoP has so many homoerotic overtones and Damn Yankees screams queer.

  13. JauntyJohn,

It's worth noting that Disney is using closeted gay actor to play Prince of Persia.

  14. Outperson,

Why do you bother labeling Jake G. as gay? Do you have proof or are you just making crap up because you want to project your desire onto him?

Casting a guy looks like a white Northern European is wrong. There are plenty of actors of color who have fit the role.

Studios put unknown actors in science fiction and fantasy films as lead actors all the time successfully.

Sure, there will be some non-white actors as Jake's sidekicks and enemies. But we all know that the HERO must be white.

Disney pulled similar crap with the cartoon "Aladdin." The character of Aladdin was drawn with white features. The movies villain was given strong Arab features--big nose, etc. It made it clear that white was good and Arab was bad.

Warner Bros. is doing the same thing with the new Avatar: The Last Airbender movie, which was based on a cartoon series about Asians and Inuit people. The lead actors in the film are white running around in Asian clothing and Asian inspired landscapes. (At the last minute, an Indian actor was tossed into the cast).

Why do Hollywood films about gays only feature heterosexual stars? How many big films like Milk feature any openly gay actors with decent roles?

I can't think of any of the Milk actors being gay. Can you?

  15. "Why do you bother labeling Jake G. as gay?"

Closeted actors in Hollywood are REALITY, not projections.

Jake Gyllenhaal is gay and bearding.

  16. My boyfriend's cousin dates this girl who used to be a hair dresser, and one of her clients told her that he goes to a personal trainer who once overhead a guy at his gym who is a bartender at a West Hollywood gay bar tell someone that he once had sex with Jake Gyllenhaal.

  17. gawd- have any of you calling racist casting foul played the game that this is based on? the voice and character model were no more authentically middle-eastern than Jake G. You're looking for authenticity in a movie based on a videogame? You might as well be complaining that Robert Pattinson is wrong for Twilight because he isn't a real vampire.

  18. Um, outperson and Will, I have no reason to take your word on anything....NEXT!

Could care less if Jake is gay or straight. I think he is a great actor and very hot and seems like a good guy. That is what I care about.

  19. Ah yes, once again the bitches have turned this into an attack on someone's sexuality. I don't think Jake has ever stated that he is gay, but yet it seems as though every bitchy queen takes the opportunity to try to "gayify" everyone in an attempt to pacify their own sexual fantasies. This is, ironically, the same crowd that would cry and call the ACLU if someone was publicly outed. Be more offended at the disregard to the integrity of the character's ethnicity than foaming at the mouth about someone's sexual preference. No wonder people think gay men are cunts. Just look in the mirror and then climb back up on your soapbox.

  20. Jake is gay.

There is nothing wrong about it.

    Get over yourselves.
