Video: Gay Belgian Couple Reunite with Son Stranded for Two Years in Ukrainian Orphanage

Reunion_ghilain

Over the weekend I reported on the reunion of Laurent Ghilain and Peter Meurrens with their son.

Ghilain and Meurrens, a Belgian couple living in Southern France, had been separated from Samuel, whom they had through a surrogate, for two years and three months because the Belgian embassy in Kiev refused to issue Samuel a passport due to restrictive surrogacy laws and anti-gay officials in Belgium. Samuel had been living in a Ukrainian orphanage while they fought for his release.

Now, here's a news report with video of Samuel and his parents' reunion with family members.

No translation necessary, really. Tears of joy and relief are universal.

Watch, AFTER THE JUMP...

  3. Glad to see that at the very last they got their son. Even so, I don’t doubt that the traumatic experience should have left the parents –specially the biological father- scarred for life. Hopefully the little guy won’t remember much though there must be some damage there too.

  7. I'm still stunned that this idiocy went on for so long. I fear that the boy will have some delays and deal with the insecure early life for a long time to come.

  8. This brought tears to my eyes as well. Theya re always yammering about the children, yet here we have a case of an innocent child being hurt because of homophobia.

Tell us again, Religious Right, how it's all protecting the children. From what...

    Love?

  9. David R, too true but the amount of unconditional love he will get from his whole family, should settle him in a few years time.

They are both scarred and will be co-dependent with each other for at least a year if not more...

    So sad.

  11. The child is very affectionate, that's a very good sign, he's reaching out for comfort...This means he is not completely damaged. I think this child will be just fine in the long run. God willing!

  14. For those of you that do the research this had nothing to do with sexuality, and everything to do with countries with no surrogacy laws grappling with the right way to handle something that they don't approve of.

I know it's very cutesy to be applauding this couple but in reality they brough a lot of the heartache of this on themselves. They only had to make one call to a lawyer to find out that could happen. Who would invest tens of thousands of dollars into anything without getting all the facts?

Long story short, get a lawyer when dealing with surrogacy before you do anything else.

  15. These guys are so lovely, their story so remarkable and heartbreaking that they will raise their son handsomely on the rewards of the blockbuster film that will be made about them. It is after all a powerful and eminently modern drama, one with the power to improve the world. And with a happy ending.
