1. MrJ says

That is awesome and it’s great to see this campaign really having a positive impact. Now I’ll say it for everyone in my Dad voice: “Dylan get in there and clean up your room!”

  2. Mike says

Mr. J Beat me to it….so in my best MOM voice. “You heard your dad!” “Don’t make me tell you again!”

  3. says

VERY cool, and what a neat kid.

lol @ how we all seem to think the same thing about his room.

Add an Auntie to the chorus of clean it up Dylan!

  4. casey says

The clip was awesome, that kid is terrific. Please though, change the title. It is offensive. “saved him” from christian counseling? really? I’m gay and christian, and you can have both.

  5. DJSauvage says

That’s a pretty awesome video. I can tell you that I’m 42 and my room is now in a beautiful house I own with my partner and I still have a messy room!

  6. Caliban the Lazy says

Don’t listen to them, Dylan! There is NO reason to make the bed up when you’re just going to mess it up again 16 hours later. Doesn’t you school tell you not to succumb peer pressure? Well NOW is the time to put those lessons to work!

  7. says

What in Gay Hell?! That background is a mess.Umm umm sweetie before posting a pic or a video make sure the background is CLEAN, it’s toooooo distracting from your message.

  8. Ronny says

Very touching. Good for him! And congrats to Dan for all those this project has helped–youth and adult alike.

  9. j says

It really makes you want to cry when you see the children (GLBT children) like this adorable boy and it reminds you of your own childhood. I think EVERY SINGLE GLBT adult needs to and must think of the Dylans every single day- set an example for the younger generation, be role models, and make sure that we lift up their voices so we can say we fight for them. People are wrong when they say that gays don’t procreate. The younger generations of gays will keep appearing because they are born like that and everybody should just cut the crap- it is NOT a choice!

We shall think of Dylan and other children and my goodness lets remember- those are our kids out there! What are we going to do about it?

  10. jexer says

Makes me wish the IGB project was around when I was his age.

Uncertainty and doubt are a form of self-torment that can be a beacon that invite bullying. The sooner gay youth can shed the “I’m a broken human” worries, the sooner they can feel assertive enough to stand up for themselves when confronted. It won’t eradicate bullying completely, but should help reduce it significantly.

  11. at says

I’m so glad y’all can’t see my room. Why so bothered by an unmade bed and a few things on the floor?

  12. says

Dylan admits he procrastinates. He is planning on making his bed and picking up his room…he just hasn’t gotten around to it yet. I hear the same thing from my kids all the time! LOL.

Terrific video…I’m so glad he did get around to making this. I love the “I’m obsessed with you guys videos.” I think that was a bit of the point, right? It makes me so happy to know the IGB project is doing the job it was intended to do.

  13. says

And here I thought I was going to spend the weekend in tears because of all the 9/11 retrospectives… turns out, it was a sweet kid telling the world he’s going to be okay.

  14. says

The very fact that you’re asking the question underscores the shortcomings of the IGB Project. We need much, much more than these videos if life is going to become livable for most LGBT kids.

  15. says

I’ve followed some of Depfox’s videos and they are one inspiring couple, courageous and uplifting with enormous conviction and compassion.
Dylan, I hope there are a million like you out there …….you have had the courage to pursue your own feelings and beliefs.

  16. Bri says

    OK – here’s what’s VERY cool.

This is a TEENAGER making a video response to an ADULT gay couple. This gay couple are mentors. That’s encouraging.

  17. says

wonderful. it’s no surprise, really. there are legions of people out there with no real outlet for conversation or support in being LGBT.

the It Gets Better campaign is wonderful in that every message can be unique – you can’t say it’s an “ineffective” campaign when it’s entirely done by individuals who make their own messages.

think it’s “missing” something? make your own damn video that includes said message. done and done.

i’ve received hundreds upon hundreds of messages from young queer people over the last few years on my youtube page. never underestimate how you can change and save someone’s life.

  18. tristram says

Great vid, great kid. It is apparent that Dylan had the courage and initiative to save himself – the internet, the Leffews and It Gets Better were the resources he found to make it work.

  19. gordon says

i’d still like to just mention that much as life does get better as you get older, you gain experience, you gain love, you become a different person than you might think you will – not in a bad way, in a good way, you never stop learning in life.

but it’s unfair to pretend life is perfect, i’m approaching 40 & never felt more alone because i’m single, i’m ok looking (i’ll not be found on xtube tho) & dating is a joke. but i’m my own person. that i’m proud of.

  20. gordon says

ps: i didn’t have the internet when i was young, i dealt with my feelings, in whatever way – youth today, world’s yer oyster, i’d aberdeen beach.

  21. ian says

so effing awesome, but i must echo others; “Dylan, pick up your room.” lol. but i must admit i’m a terrible slob too.

  22. Chuck Mielke says

Oh, for f**k sake! What is this about the kid’s room? The kid’s aching for acceptance and all you can see is an unkempt bed and some laundry? The boy has realized that he’s not alone, not in need of “christian counseling,” and maybe that he’ll be ok without being straight, and so many of you wanna tell him he’s a slob? Please pay attention to the important stuff.

  23. Gene Knapp says

Knowing that “It Gets Better” has helped one person makes the whole program worthwhile. Keep up the good, solid work. Here’s to a wonderful future!

  24. truthteller says

    @ chuck,
Well said. Some people just have a need to pick on people even when they have just announced their liberation at a young age. Dylan is to be congratulated and uplifted not be scolded by people who deem themselves the rule-enforcers of what society deems we should do…isn’t that the whole point we fight every day?

You go, Dylan. Congratulations for not letting others spiritually harm you.

  25. angela says

That’s really moving — but why is the title ‘Saved from Christian Counseling’? It’s like Dylan’s supposed question, Why COULDN’T one be gay and have a family? Why CAN’T you be a gay Christian? Of course you can.

  26. GaryJ says

That’s so great! Good to see the young man found his answer before getting brainwashed.

A typical teen boy, their rooms are always a wreck.

Jay & Bryan are great, love their channel.

  27. Paul says

well I thought that was great…
You know the Dan and Terry videos have had such a huge impact on the Nation that is scares the hell out of the Religious Right.
    What a sweet kid!!

  28. NaughtyLola says

Oh my good god, can he possibly be any cuter? I feel kind of wrong and a little Mary Kay Letourneau-ish about thinking how adorable he is (messy room, unmade bed, and the way he says “expecially”, in particular). He is going to leave a trail of broken hearts and unrequited crushes behind him when he finally gets to college.

  29. Abel says

I’m well into my 7th decade, and I can only try to imagine how wonderful this would have been in my youth – some way of knowing you weren’t alone, that things would get better, and that life could be lived on one’s own terms. Of course, we barely had television in my day, never mind the internet. It was a tough time to grow up gay. And it still is, but things are getting better.

  30. JGC says

There’s some neat-freak teenage boy out there who this sweet kid’s going to make a great partner for one day.

  31. fred says

it’s 9/11, my 50th birthday. this kid says it all, God forbid a Rick Perry or Michele Bachmann gets elected because just a few more years will turn into an eternity and I want live to see universal sufferage for all of us!

    This kid is awesome(tears).

  32. Domino says

Miss Stuffed Animal said: “The very fact that you’re asking the question underscores the shortcomings of the IGB Project.”

So what are YOU doing about it?

Such mendacity, rudeness, vulgarity, vindictiveness, smug condescension and snide swagger. This Stuffed Animal creature exhibits them all. I wonder if there could actually be a nice person underneath that nasty attitude she carries around?

There’s an uplifting message from IT GETS BETTER that you surely could benefit from … but you have to open your heart in order to receive it. How’s about it, then? Do you even have enough heart left to make the effort?

  33. William says

The clip was awesome, that kid is terrific. Please though, change the title. It is offensive. “saved him” from christian counseling? really? I’m gay and christian, and you can have both.

I am gay and christian too Casey and you are correct that you can have both but he will need to get away from fundamentalist churches in order to find the real God, the real Jesus who accepts all of us as we are. The mainline christian church of today simply does not embrace the message of Jesus. Until I left “the church” did I find the real christian church and the real Jesus that the bible talks about. My prayers are with him.

  34. Bobby says

What a great kid! Hats off to all the folks who made the videos that turned things around for him. So glad that he’s happy once again and gets to live the rest of his life free, like he’s supposed to.

Definitely the bright spot of my day here.

  35. Dback says

Dylan, I hope someone somewhere finds you and gives you the biggest hug and all the love you so richly deserve. God bless ya, kiddo! (I wasn’t good about making my bed, either.) :)

  36. M says

Great kid, I wish him all the best and am thankful beyond words that he is learning that being gay does not mean he can’t be who he wants to be or that he doesn’t deserve it.

To those who complained about the headline: He listed Christian counseling as something he was considering before he found hope and affirmation in these videos. We’re not talking ‘Jesus loves you’ here, we’re talking mental rape by predators like George Rekers and Marcus Bachman, telling him that his feelings are a sin and a disease and that he can never be happy or worthwhile unless he magically changes and that failure to magically change is his fault for being a perverted little fag. Unless that’s your idea of Christianity, the headline’s not knocking Christianity.

  37. Thomasina says

    @Casey and Angela:
Nothing about the headline or the post says that he is being saved from *Christianity*, or that people can’t be both gay and Christian. But it is disingenuous to deny or ignore the fact that some denominations of Christianity have or recommend so called “counseling services” that claim to “cure” homosexuality as their official policies on how to handle gay parishioners. If a gay kid is unlucky enough to be born into a family that belongs to one of those denominations, “pray away the gay” programs are often presented to his or her parents as their only choice. It’s a real problem that can and should be criticized without you assuming that it’s a blanket criticism of all Christianity, even the more welcoming and enlightened denominations.

  38. Thomasina says

Also, criticizing a teenager for having a messy bedroom is like getting angry at rain for making you wet while you were standing in it.
