Chad Griffin Named President of Human Rights Campaign

Chad_griffin

American Foundation for Equal Rights board president Chad Griffin, an instrumental figure in the federal legal battle challenging Proposition 8, is to be named the new President of the Human Rights Campaign on June 11, the organization announced today. Griffin will replace outgoing President Joe Solmonese, who writes:

I am so proud that he will succeed me this June leading HRC.

A native of Arkansas and a veteran of the Clinton White House, Chad was inspired by young people in taking on this new endeavor. He told the board this morning, "All over this country in big cities and small towns, there are families and young people who long to be accepted for who they are, and who want be treated with the same dignity and respect as everyone else. Today's generation of young people, and each generation hereafter, must grow up with the full and equal protection of our laws, and finally be free to participate in the American dream. As HRC president, I’ll approach our work with a great sense of urgency because there are real life consequences to inaction."

GriffinMore on Griffin from his bio at AFER:

Chad Griffin, founding partner of political and communications strategy firm Griffin|Schake, has spent his career taking on the toughest fights against the most entrenched, well-financed interests like Big Tobacco, Big Oil and the right wing to shape the policy debate around some of the nation’s most important issues, including equal rights, clean energy, universal health care, stem cell research, and early childhood education. Griffin led the largest ballot initiative ever recorded, Proposition 87: California’s Clean Alternative Energy Initiative; Proposition 10, which generates $600 million a year to early childhood education; and Proposition 71, which secured billions of dollars for stem cell research despite the Bush Administration ban.

Griffin’s fundraising and strategic counsel in the final weeks of the campaign to oppose Proposition 8 earned him selection as one of The Advocate’s 2008 People of the Year. A veteran of the Clinton White House communications team, Griffin was the youngest staffer ever to serve in the West Wing. He is an executive producer of the recently released Kirby Dick film “Outrage.”

Andrew Harmon at The Advocate has more:

Griffin will take over at HRC just five months prior to the November elections in a year both precarious and promising for LGBT rights. Anti-marriage equality referendums loom in multiple states following huge victories in the Washington and Maryland legislatures. Meanwhile, political candidates including Wisconsin Rep. Tammy Baldwin, who’s in a tight race to become the first openly gay U.S. senator, are vying to add greater diversity among elected officials.

And Griffin’s position at the organization will require a broader focus on issues beyond marriage, from employment discrimination to health care disparities faced by gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Americans.

Griffin will remain on the board of the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER), the organization he co-founded in 2009 to organize, publicize, and fund the Prop. 8 lawsuit. Bruce Cohen, a fellow AFER board member and an Academy Award-winning producer whose films include American Beauty and Milk, applauded the announcement, saying that Griffin’s new position “makes a very strong statement on behalf of HRC that they chose him to lead.”

  1. A white man heading the HRC. How shocking!

  2. Wow! Excellent move!

This is a very positive move on HRC's part. I'm willing to give them another chance.

I may have to start my monthly contributions to HRC back up again and put my equal sign back on my car. I haven't had anything to do with them for at least four years now.

  3. Tampazeke, we'll just have to wait and see. I hope that this will bring about some changes to the way HRC functions, but I'm not going to get my checkbook out until I see some proof.

  4. This sounds promising.

Though I had to remove AmFER from my Facebook because they kept trying to convince their members that Republicans were progressing on marriage equality.

I'll be in wait and see mode.

  5. Don't let the screen door hit you on the way out, Joe.

I'm not all that up on Chad Griffin's bona-fides ... but just considering what AFER has accomplished over the past couple of years, I'm willing to assume a decisive improvement is in the works.

  6. Just hope this doesn't diminish or reduce the efforts of AFER. Not sure if anyone can refocus HRC at this point - it might have been better to let them fade away as new groups like AFER take up the fight.

  7. He is a definite improvement over Solomese. This is good news, but if the rest of the org is still in the finely lined pockets of the elite, without a clue as to what the majority of the GLBT community wants from HRC, then he will have an uphill battle making effective change. However, for such a young (and damn sexy) guy, he's achieved a great deal. I have faith he can make HRC better, and it's up to the community to tell him what we want from them.

  8. Cool I wish him the best

  9. @joeyhegele:
Maybe he was the best candidate for the job, despite the color of his skin.

Posted by: too boot | Mar 2, 2012 12:17:43 PM

  10. I don't see what his color could possibly have to do with it, but it gives another flaming liberal the opportunity to whine about something else. You want a biracial, female, single mom in every position of power? Sorry, that's not how it works.

  11. This is good news! Sounds like a great leader.

    Posted by: zeddy | Mar 2, 2012 12:36:28 PM

  12. I wish him well but my personal preference would be to avoid the "born this way" rhetoric, which I don't believe to be helpful.

    Posted by: Matt | Mar 2, 2012 12:56:06 PM

  13. An excellent choice. He is articulate, smart and connected politically which is exactly what HRC needs.

    Posted by: Veritas | Mar 2, 2012 2:18:08 PM

  14. Anything is better than back room deal Joe. But my god, do they go out of their way to pick boring, dull, drab, poorly dressed men for this job? Geeze, this one is even more whitebread than the last

  15. At AFER, Griffin was able to successfully raise money from the usually very disconnected LA crowd - something never done before. That's where his success ends. Boies and Olson are making million of dollars off the Prop 8 case- a case they should be doing pro-bono. The Supreme Court ultimately will send a giant middle finger back to the 9th circuit as it usually does. CA will not have marriage until it's taken to the ballot again.

What's troubling is that HRC had a defining moment to showcase the diversity of the LGBT community. Hiring yet another rich white male to head our largest national organization is truly disappointing. All the rich white gays can get together for black-tie gala and celebrate.

In the end Griffin is a show boat. At least he'll continue to raise money from the whoremonger celebrity obsessed LA scene, yet be tied down by the mediocrity that is the HRC board.

    Posted by: Matthew | Mar 2, 2012 3:00:25 PM

  16. @matthew: Olsen and Boies are handling this case on a *mostly* pro bono basis. AFER insisted they be paid. A compromise was reached. Would be a shame if facts got in the way of a good argument though.

Griffin has been successful in uniting many disparate parts of our community in the marriage fight. I for one, am hoping he brings his zeal and push for actual resulys and not just lip service to HRC.

    Posted by: DenguyFL | Mar 2, 2012 3:10:26 PM

  17. @DENGUYFL - Really? @$10mm for Boies/Olson the last two years - fantastic compromise. AFER and it's leadership are clearly great at negotiations. Griffin will be tied down. The HRC board is bankrupt in talent and activist skill.

    Posted by: Matthew | Mar 2, 2012 3:17:28 PM

  18. Hopefully Mr. Griffen will promote actual "G/L issues" at the HRC, not just slavishly-follow the DNC's agenda. The HRC is supposed to represent the entire G/L community, not just the Democrat supporters of Pres. Obama.

  19. I didn't read about him. I just made assumptions based on his looks. He reminds me of the even gay villain type guy from Real World circa 1999. i think hawaii.

  20. some message being conveyed with the body language of that shot
did they tell him to butch it up for the press photo?
he sure seems to have gotten the male message to occupy the most space possible
i think someone of color, someone not male, not someone rocking a clone look
would be a nice first step -
    qualifications?
has this guy ever lived in another country?
    does he speak another language?
has he ever lived in a small town or rural area as an adult?
    has he ever been poor?
on all of these i bet
    not

  21. I recommend to the incoming president, that the HRC have less Black-Tie events in this political year, that cost the average gay seniors, students and blue collar workers OUT of attending them. If they can pay their Presidents over a quarter of a million bucks,to start paying their volunteers at least minimum wages. And also to stop having their executives fly and stay at first class hotels! RIGHT NOW,they seem to be more in alignment with Log Cabin members then working class Independents and Democrats.

Obama has done this country as much good as a snooze button on smoke alarm.

His change of mind on Same Sex Marriage is a total disgrace, don't forget it's an election year.

Yes,that is all he wants,is the votes from those who are toooo blind and ignorant to see the damage he done. Those who voted for him only heard WE NEED A CHANGE. Well they got their change,an illegal Muslim that has done nothing since he has been in office. We have higher taxes, more unemployment, more illegals in this country getting welfare, food stamps, free medical and drawing social security. But they got their change. They think it is ok for him to take lavish vacations and his wife to spend on the tax payers money. They think it is ok to live with mommy and daddy and drain them of their retirement. But they got their change. It is sad we as real American Citizens have had to live for these last 3 and half years without a president.God help us if we have to go another 4 years without a real president

  25. Subject: Same sex Marriage / Aids

This aids epidemic is a total disgrace, this is all due to the fact that blacks
    in the Africa
years ago had sex with apes. Then when whites brought blacks to America as
    slaves,some of the
plantation owners pop a few of the black women. This is what happens when the
Baboons have unprotected sex.Statistic show that Blacks carry 57% of the aids
    cases,Latinos 19% and whites 19%.
