Straights Only

From Castroburger, a street artist and Towleroad reader:

GodhatesfactsI  have started a new sticker campaign, Straights Only.  It is a play on the Whites Only signs of segregated America. The campaign has spread over the past months to Mexico, Latin America, Texas, North Carolina, Arizona, England, and Scotland and we hope this is just the beginning.

After my boyfriend had to go back to the UK this past February (thanks to DOMA), I needed to vent my frustration and came up with Straights Only after reading a story about a Whites Only sign put up at a public pool in Ohio in 2011.

My intent is to shock the viewer before they read the small print and discover this is about the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which was set up in 1996 to protect traditional marriage. So far this year DOMA has kept my boyfriend 5500 miles away for 4 months and forced us to spend our 5th anniversary apart. And we're not alone in this situation (I'm sure you are aware). There are tens of thousands of other same-sex couples facing considerable time apart each year.

We hope to start making an impact not just in the big cities with Straights Only, but in communities like I grew up in, Denton, Texas.

A bigcartel store has been created for anyone who'd like to get involved.  All proceeds fund my boyfriend's Visa fees. People can also check out our Facebook page.

I asked my boyfriend if he could summarize our struggle for a post and he sent me this:

5 years, 1 month together
$11,000 on flights
143,000 miles flown
312 hours in the air
$4000 visa process
930 missed days together

Need we say more? We are desperate to get our story & our campaign out there so that we can be together and help other gays & lesbians who are in similar situations.

  1. Still puzzled why Democrat Bill Clinton signed DOMA into law. I guess that means all Democrats hate me because I'm gay.

And that sign from registered Democrat, Fred Phelps, of Westboro Baptist Church, supporter of Barack Obama is just tired.

    Enough already.

  3. One of the many activist groups I joined after Prop 8 passed (in addition to the one I was with before) made up hundreds of such stickers (and Gays Only ones, too). We stuck them on water fountains, park benches, tons of places. It was a really fun and subversive campaign, but it didn't take off as much as we'd hoped.

I still have a few of the stickers!

  4. this may just breed more homophobia though.
Like people will actually believe they are real and like it.

  6. IGNORE ALAN! He is just trolling to get a reaction.

  7. @Alan No one takes your posts seriously. Anyone who can't tell the difference between the Democrats, who are starting to include marriage equality in their party platforms, and the Republicans, who continue to include a commitment to anti-gay legislation in theirs, is clearly an imbecile. You're an imbecile.

  8. The artist needs to clearly show the separation with that "straights only" sign.
Where is the "gays only" sign?

I grew up in a segregated South - and I mean the late 1960s, babies.
The only restaurant in our small county had a separate entrance that said "colored entrance."

That is what the artist needs to evoke.
He needs to show OBVIOUS separation.
There was no need to be obvious in the 1960s - it was assumed.

  9. I know how you feel - DOMA and its effect on US Immigration policy has cost myself and my partner thousands of dollars and caused us a lot of work problems. People have no idea of the consequences of this law....

  10. Horrible story - although why bother with staying in the US - wouldn't it be easier to move to England?

  11. Wow THAT's commitment. And the faggots in new york can't commit to cross the brooklyn bridge.

  12. It's not really that subversive, to me it's kind of cheesy. Directly comparing the equal rights movement to the civil rights movement is always a slippery slope b/c these struggles are embedded in culture and identity. Yes, gays have been marginalized but blacks had been enslaved as well as marginalized. Some people might not appreciate the comparisons.

  13. so let me get this 'straight': you want to agitate people with a divisive and easily mis-understood slogan in order to fundraise so that you can pay off your boyfriend's credit card bills ??? wow. that's a new one.

  14. The gay version of this sticker would read: No Fats, No Fems. Or, No Blacks, No Asians.

  16. This guy says his partner is from the UK, so if he REALLY wanted to be with him, why don't they just get a civil union in the UK? That would give him the opportunity to move there and be with him.

  17. It hurts my heart to read this. I live in Jamaica; and honestly, most of the victories that I get to celebrate regarding LGBT issues really happen in the U.S.A. I am really hope that the repeal of DOMA is another victory I will soon get to celebrate. Jamaica is light years away from some of the progress that you all have made. I might be stuck here for now, but I hope to one day be able to celebrate a few victories of my own. Don't give up the fight, Andy. More power to you and your boyfriend! :-)

  20. Sorry guys. Just remember, every time I make up false things about democrats and liberals it's because my mom is watching over my shoulder (she monitors my internet usage to make sure i don't masturbate to gay porn) and I need to remind her that I'm still sucking up to her and the rest of my republican-voting family.

They're really bigoted Christians, and you should all be more sympathetic.
