European Commission: Gay Rights Respect Required for EU Entry

Respect for gay rights is a requirement for countries hoping to enter the European Union, the European Commission said in a note this week, EU Observer reports:

Eu"Rights of LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] people thus form an integral part of both the Copenhagen political criteria for accession and the EU legal framework on combatting discrimination. They are closely monitored by the EU commission, which reports annually on the progress made by enlargement countries with regard to the situation of the LGBT community," it said.

The commission note was sent to EUobserver in response to a question born of an interview with an Armenian cleric.

Armenia, a deeply Christian country where church teaching has more authority than in many EU states with Christian roots, is keen to become an EU member.

  1. I thought they'd already made this clear?

  2. What about Turkey's bid? I know it's stalled on some civil rights issues but uncertain about what. I can't find anything about Turkey's stance on LGBT as a part of the negotiations. Hopefully the EU will stand up to religious bigots better than our repugantcrats do.

  5. This is RIDICULOUS ! This was supposed to be in place for years but many current members of the EU still have TERRIBLE gay rights records ! This is just empty, stupid words from weak, failing politicians who are doing NOTHING to address gay rights.

Are they going to throw current members out of the EU for anti-gay laws ? No. Politicians are a WASTE OF TIME.

  6. Well, when they speak of LGTB rights respect, they mean: don’t send them to prison and let them be in public, as long as they don’t parade, that other thingy. And that’s it. If it was something else, many new members wouldn’t have had the chance of faking their ways to get into that failed promise that is now the EU.
