Anti-Gay Florida Rep. Allen West Concedes to Patrick Murphy

After two weeks of refusing to accept that vote-counting by officials in St. Lucie County, Florida, favored his opponent Patrick Murphy, including a recount which extended Murphy's lead, Rep. Allen West (R-FL) conceded the race late Tuesday, Politico reports:

WestWest acknowledged that he couldn’t surmount his 1,904-vote, or 0.58 percent, deficit. That difference was just outside the 0.5 percent threshold to automatically trigger a recount of all votes.

Said West in a statement:

“For two weeks since Election Day, we have been working to ensure every vote is counted accurately and fairly. We have made progress towards that goal, thanks to the dedication of our supporters and their unrelenting efforts to protect the integrity of the democratic process. While many questions remain unanswered, today I am announcing that I will take no further action to contest the outcome of this election...I pray he will serve his constituents with honor and integrity, and put the interests of our nation before his own.”

  5. The scary part is that it wasn't a landslide victory for his opponent.

  7. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. One of the most dangerous, unqualified, ignorant people ever to hold office in this country, and that's saying something. Good people of Florida, don't let this loon back in next time around, you know he will be back.

  8. Poor Allen West. His corrupt and equally vile anti-gay buddy Gov Rick Scott couldn't save him from disgrace.

  13. Now he can add "sore loser" to his resume of dubious and disgusting "accomplishments".

  15. this news was the second best news for me since Romney lost the election.. for those who may not know or remember, Mr. West has stated that "being gay is like choosing chocolate mint ice cream" now I feel sorry for chocolate mint ice cream..

  16. @Bernie: somehow I forgot about such a possibly racist statement from an African American. So, being straight is liking chocolate (!) and being gay just likes it with mint added?

The Republicans (especially the Tea Party) are all about personal responsibility. Sometimes that means foregoing oneself and thinking about the group first. I guess they haven't grown up enough not to be totally self-centered.

  17. The House Of Representatives will be a slightly better place without Allen West. There will be one less wing nut Tea Partier. About 70 more to go.
