News: Rand Paul, Twink, Nate Berkus, Outserve-SLDN, Leah Remini

RoadMAP: The quietest places in NYC.

RoadSuperman's Henry Cavill is a single man.

RoadRand Paul says he has "a zero tolerance policy for anybody who displays discriminatory behavior or belief in discriminating against people" on the same day he opposed ENDA on a Senate panel.

TwinkRoadThe Awl performs a thorough analysis of the term twink: "Like hipster before it, twink has become a non-specific word that serves to define something distasteful but whose meaning changes depending on who says it and to whom. A lot of the time, a twink seems to be anybody—no matter their body type or their age—who is girly or makes poor consumer choices and/or seems to be in a state of perpetual disrepair. And while nobody will admit to being a twink, everybody is happy to flag one for everybody else to ridicule."

RoadActress Leah Remini runs from Scientology.

RoadJustin Bieber's mom addresses his bad behavior: “I mean, people don’t talk about all the great things he does every day..."

RoadOutserve-SLDN bankrupt, will close offices: "The news comes after two weeks of confusion following the allegedly accidental leak of an email by then- board member Sue Fulton, proposing that the board meet to seek Executive Director Allyson Robinson’s resignation."

Road'Lesbian baby' billboards cleared by Australian watchdog. "The ads have been the subject of two complaints to the Advertising Standards Bureau as well as hate mail directed to billboard company GOA, News Limited reports."

RoadRepublicans use farm bill to attack food stamp program.

RoadRicky Martin relaxes in Puerto Rico, flies a kite.

BerkusRoadNate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent show off their fancy Hollywood home.

RoadA newly-discovered blue planet has glass rain and 4,500 mph winds. "NASA discovered the planet, dubbed HD 189733b, in 2005, but recently discovered new facts about its atmosphere with the Hubble telescope. The thing is only 2.9 million miles from its sun, which sounds far, but consider that Earth is 92.9 million miles away from ours. To make matters even more insane, the night temperature can be as much as 500 degrees lower than the day temperature."

RoadBrigitte Bardot saves two elephants from execution.

RoadEmbracing life beyond 50: Begin with Yes. "I felt like we need positive images in general, and specifically need more positive messaging about gay men aging happily. People do form opinions and beliefs based on things they see in the media, and we need to expand the vision and the reality of what being an older gay man actually means. I feel like right now is the perfect time to do it!"

RoadJesse Metcalfe plays tennis, shirtless.

HoneyboobooRoadHoney Boo Boo goes to Washington.

RoadRichmond airport settles with Fourth Amendment flasher.

RoadBoeing 787 catches fire at Heathrow Airport. "A Boeing 787 Dreamliner operated by Ethiopian Airlines caught fire at Britain's Heathrow airport on Friday, forcing the closure of both runways, in a blow for the U.S. planemaker that sent its New York shares down over 6 percent."

RoadWhat the ENDA Senate panel vote says about the state of gay rights.

RoadConservatives pushing a new smear campaign: gay parenting is child abuse. "Conservatives have championed the writing of activist Robert Oscar Lopez, who is essentially an “ex-gay” bisexual who blames his adult social dysfunction on having been raised by a lesbian mom. This week, he wrote that same-sex parenting inherently constitutes “child abuse,” as do single-parent adoption and divorce. These attacks were endorsed by the American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer and NOM, which proceeded to feature Lopez’s ex-gay-sounding biography in its weekly email on Friday."

  1. Now we know what Bieber is so messed up.

Maybe Cavill isn't Superman in bed?

  2. I have zero tolerance for the continuous lie that is
    Rand 'whats another mountaintop' Paul.

  3. "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" has come to Mexican television and it's dubbed in Spanish, which makes it lose some of that good old, sketti flavor.

  4. @Dastius: We've had our own version of Honey Boo Boo in Mexico for years, it's called "La Güereja". Go YouTube it.

  5. In what planet is 'twink' a negative term? Certainly not on mine ;-)

    Posted by: bernard | Jul 12, 2013 3:44:22 PM

  6. Never thought twink was a negative term. While it certainly is broader than it once was, from what i can tell its a young looking smooth attractive gay boy

  7. "Twink: A skinny/thin young male, aged 18 to 23 with little to no body hair and has that general "boy next door" look that many drool over."

How difficult of a definition is that? And how could that ever be construed as being negative?

  8. It took a trans activist only 9 months to put a thriving organization into bankruptcy. And instead of resigning and being apologetic, she forced the board to fire her and then allowed unfounded allegations of "transphobia" to proliferate unchallenged. What a classy "gal".

Good advice for gay civil rights organizations: Stick to gay civil rights, not new frontiers in "gender expression". Hire competent people who can raise money and accomplish goals, and don't try to "make history" by putting your group in the hands of trans activists.

  9. “I mean, people don’t talk about all the great things he does every day...."

Now we know why Bieber is such a brat.

  10. That definition of "twink" works as a descriptor that
s neutral, but I know plenty of folks who use the word as a putdown. for a certain kind of behavior. The exact nature of that behavior varies, of course. I snarl about twinkiness (usually to myself but sometimes talking with others) when some self-obsessed younger guy shuts me out for being too old for his idea of what a gay planet's population ought to be.
I followed the link to the article about what happens to twinks, and hope sincerely that many mature into happy, more tolerant Twonks.

  11. Not a fan of Rand Paul (he's a fake libertarian), but your criticism of him is not logical in this case.

It is entirely possible to be against discrimination while bit believing that the government should make it illegal. Much like it is possible to be against racism but believe that the KKK's speech is protected by the First Amendment.

  12. Never heard of the Awl before. Apparently it's a commentary site about tools. Or by tools.

  13. The definition in the post above doesn't make sense to me. Who defines 'twink' that way? Phoenix Justice is spot-on. I don't think the word carries any connotation. It's no better or worse than 'bear' or 'daddy' or 'otter.'

  14. Funny. I never interpreted the term "Twink" in the negative way they describe. I always thought it represents both an age and a type - youngish, lithe, impish... A smooth otter... The kind of guys us older guys wish we still were. I never saw anything to be insulted by the term... I don't particularly use it a lot myself, but when I see the term used in print or other media, I don't think of it in a negative connotation.

  17. Any chance the Canadians can take Justin Beaver back, and bury him somewhere in the northern woods, also that nut of a mother? What a terrible little twit!

  18. To me "twink" has always had a negative connotation, even back when I technically fit most of the criteria to BE a twink. Certainly youth and usually a "waifish" build are part of it, but also a high degree of shallowness. At least according to my mental map, twinks are politically unengaged and most interested in clothing, hair, and the Lowest Common Denominator of pop and dance music.

I just saw them as the "Heathers" of the gay community, a b!tchy clique of airheads.
