ExxonMobil to Offer Benefits to Married Gay Couples

Exxonmobil

ExxonMobil which is facing a major anti-gay discrimination lawsuit in Illinois, says it will give benefits to legally married same-sex couples for the first time, the AP reports:

The company says it will recognize "all legal marriages" when it determines eligibility for health care plans for the company's 77,000 employees and retirees in the U.S. That means if a gay employee has been married in a state or country where gay marriage is legal, his or her spouse will be eligible for benefits with the company starting next year.

  1. Desperation. Now, will they actually HIRE openly gay people? Probably not. There's the problem, or at least, has been the problem all along with Exxon.

  2. They're pretty much doing it because they have to, no thanks to them. While I'm well aware that no oil company is going to come without heavy baggage, I've deliberately avoided Exxon and Mobil stations for years, and I'm not seeing any real reason to change that.

  4. Mobil had domestic partner benefits before it was subsumed by Exxon. Mobil employees, even cashiers, had good health insurance benefits before Exxon. When Exxon took over they sold off a lot of the corporate stations to Hajji and Patel, gutted the benefit plans, and screwed over a lot of long term employees who were participating in longevity programs like retirement plans.

  5. What are these benefits worth if we're faced with the challenge of Global Warming thanks in part to Exxon Mobil.

  6. They should NOT be given a pass. This is a direct result of the DOL decision on ERISA from last week. They are not doing this out of the kindness of their heart - this is compliance....

  9. HAGATHA Today the UN released a report that states they are 99% certain humans are to blame for Global Warming. Maybe it is you who needs to grow a conscience and start caring about the environment.

  11. Whatever. Obeying the law. Big deal.

  12. Dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century, but here they are. Even Exxon, mighty as they are, can't avoid reality.

  13. Jay - I read about that. Don't you think that with 800 authors the report could have managed better than "maybe this" and
"could be" that? Moreover, you didn't see a plan or mention of some new technology , did you? What happened at Copenhagen? Whiny little bots cried because the first world nations wouldn't send billions of dollars to third world communist/socialist bureaucracies. Exactly how would giving billions of dollars to Evo Morales stop "climate change"? It wouldn't.

    I repeat, Grow up.

  16. Jay - If you want to stop "climate change" then by all means disconnect yourself from the hive. No more electricity, car, bus, Muni, synthetic fibers, (or anything really) for you. No more jeans which were made on coal fired sewing machines in Pakistan and brought to you by diesel shipping and trucking. No more air conditioning for you. No more airplanes. And by the way, that electric car you can't afford burns coal and natural gas.

In fact, most of the luxuries of your life and standards of modern living were invented by caucasians and brought to you by companies like Exxon, Apple, Toyota, and now China National Petroleum and Hutchinson Whampoa.

  17. Exxon Mobil is the heir, over many configurations, to Standard Oil of New Jersey, which colluded with Germany's IG Farben company to corner the market in world oil prior to World War II. IG Farben was the manufacturer of Zyklon B, the cyanide-based pesticide which was used in the Nazi genocide showers. Exxon (previously Esso) and Farben are birds of a feather. Standard Oil, of course, was founded by John D. Rockefeller, who led a long, strange life, the first half by becoming by far the most successful of the 19th century industrial barons and purportedly the richest man in the world, and his last 40 years devoted to an astounding panoply of charitable works.
