Gay Dads' Family Photo Causes Outrage on Twitter

This photo of gay fathers Kaleb and Kordale, posted to their Instagram account (along with lots of cute others) is making headlines after it reportedly stirred up a ridiculous heap of anti-gay outrage on Twitter from people offended by two black men taking care of their children.

Wrote the pair on Instagram:

Being fathers is getting our daughters up at 5:30 am making breakfast getting them dressed for school and putting them on the bus by 6:30 .This is a typical day in our household . It's not easy but we enjoy every moment and eveny minute of #fatherhood . #proudfathers #blackfathers #prouddads #gaydads

KordaleMusedMag first noted the uproar, as well as positive comments which mostly took the form of "Finally, a black gay couple"

Writes Beyond Steven:

Are we that sheltered from black gay couples that the general public doesn’t think they exist? But, can you blame them? There is hardly an image of “gay” love that features people of color. In the heat of  national marriage equality campaigns, if you google black gay couple you get bunch of Tumblr links. This is not like the in-depth articles when you google the opposite. It’s almost like black gay couples don’t exist – but we do.

The couple released a statement to the Huffington Post which reads, in part:

As far as the positive; yes we are two gay men with three kids who have no problem with preparing them for their education every morning; that comes with anything and everything they may need for school! Our kids are blessed to have three parents (Kordale, Kaleb and their Mother) who love, care and support them in every decision they have made and will continue to make as they get older. We are blessed to have the ability to provide for them in ways that a lot of people cannot for their family, which ultimately makes us happy knowing that they don't want for much! Our main objective as parents is to provide, love, educate, support, encourage, and love some more!

In regard to the negative, people fail to realize that we are people too with kids who love us. We do what is necessary for them to succeed in this ever-changing world but it's sad that we're discriminated against because of our sexuality and/or what we do behind closed doors -- which is no one's business. In the same breath, we take all of what's been said in stride. The picture was put out on social media for an opinion so we can't be mad when people give just that: an opinion. People tend to think that gay people cannot raise their children to be heterosexuals. Instead, they have derogatory thoughts of us "tainting" our children or "confusing them" with what society sees deems as wrong an unmanly because we're gay. But this is all comical because people forget where a lot of gays come from: a heterosexual household.

  6. This is so heartwarming. It's a shame that they received so much negative feedback, but Twitter really is the Devil's notebook.

The guys are hot too. :)

  7. Good for them for putting themselves out there and smashing stereotypes. BRAVO.

  8. This is similar to another incident that occurred recently... a straight African-American father posted a picture on his blog of him getting his daughter ready for school, and it went viral when the racists got a hold of it.

I'd be shocked if the Drudge Report is not involved somehow.

  9. Nice to see.
Isn't it interesting that these types of loving images are what makes the religious zealots/politicos/talking heads froth over with superior judgement and hatred while gay humans are being brutally beaten and murdered every day by their supposed "love".
Their heads are probably exploding in Africa if they saw this display of love.
Keep up the great work guys and your family is beautiful.

  10. Honestly I cannot see what the uproar is all about. The only thing I *WOULD* advise against, though, is pulling that hair back so tight--that can cause traction alopecia. Let her hair be how it is--natural and beautiful.

  11. Three more little treasures today. Love it when Towleroad has articles on LGBT families. With all the animosity we have to put up with every day seeing this loving couple & their adorable little ones helps to renew the spirit.

Good job Kaleb & Kordale. You make a beautiful family and as @Ken said, they sure look like they're surrounded by love.

It may not have been in your plan but you should know that you're doing a tremendous amount of good by putting a actual face to the families hurt by those who vilify us. Stay loving. Stay strong.

  13. Kaleb: We live in a five-bedroom home. We have three beautiful children. There’s a room for Kordale. There’s a room for Kaleb and there’s a room for each individual child. The oldest child says, “Kaleb, you’re my daddy’s best, best, best best friend in the whole wide world.” I say that meaning the kids do not know that we are in a relationship. We don’t portray that image in front of the kids because we don’t want to put them in the mindset of being gay and that’s what you’re going to be because we are gay.

WTF?!?! Kids aren't stupid. By pretending that you're NOT in a same-sex relationship you're doing more harm to those kids than good. FYI - don't post pics of the two of your tonguing one another if you don't want people to know that you're a couple. Duh!

  14. Beautiful family! We need more images and stories like this in the media.

  15. They don't need to pay attention to what people say. From the looks of those little girls' expressions, they're doing everything right.

  19. My only concern is the girls going to school at 6:30 am, that seems to early for young minds to be gearing up for learning.

  20. This is what's needed, more picture of same sex partners with their kids doing everyday activities. This would show the rest of the backwards country that these families are just as good as theirs.

  21. I must confess I would be one of the people saying 'Finally a Black gay couple".Only because every time you see a out black man he has a white boyfriend like Don Lemon.

  22. Simply wonderful. What a shame they have to even "take in stride" the hateful comments their posting "inspired" in some truly nasty people. What a lovely family! I wish them tons more love, and tons less nastiness.

  23. They look like wonderful happy lucky they are.

  24. Do we have to guess what the negative comments were like? Hopefully, this will help push public opinion in favor of gay rights despite the public objections.

  25. How can anyone be outrage about family who cares and loves one another? I wish all the happiness to them.
