Tennis Legend Martina Navratilova Marries Long-Time-Partner: VIDEO

Navratilova

Martina Navratilova married Julia Lemigova yesterday in New York City, The Huffington Post reports. The pair had been dating for eight years when earlier this year at the U.S. Open, in which Navratilova was competing in the doubles competition, Navratilova popped the question to Lemigova, a moment that was broadcast on the jumbotron to cheers from the assembled spectators.

Navratilova and Lemigova spoke to the BBC shortly after saying "I do." Navratilova for her part commented that the experience of being able to marry the woman she loves "is just really odd."

“I’m 58 years old – I got married for the first time! It’s about time. Growing up as a gay woman you just don’t ever think about that. And then about ten years ago I thought ‘You know, I think within 10 years gay marriage will be legal – and here we are 10 years [later], making it legal.”

Navratilova made waves when she came out as bisexual in 1981 at the top of her game, so to speak. Despite the fact that over thirty years has passed since that time and LGBT civil rights have progressed leaps and bounds, no male tennis star has yet to come out, a fact that Navratilova also finds odd: “They’re so far in the closet I don’t even know who they are. It’s funny, sport has been at the forefront of so many civil rights issues, but it’s been not great on the gay rights issue.”

Navratilova won a total of 59 grand slams in her professional career and holds the record for the longest winning streak (74 matches) and is tied for most Wimbledon titles won (20) with none other than out activist and tennis legend in her own right Billie Jean King.

BioWare Creates Custom Marriage Proposal Videogame For One Lucky Gamer

BioWare, the Canadian software company known for producing the hit video game series Mass Effect, created a custom video game level from the series for one of their fans named Jackie who wrote an email to the developer asking if they could help her propose to her girlfriend, Amy, in a memorable manner in a story posted on BioWare's Blog.

Marriage proposalStudio Manager Marie-Renée Brisebois of BioWare Montréal obliged Jackie's request and asked other developers if they would be interested in fulfilling Jackie's request. Brisebois assembled a small team composed of writers, level designers and analysts to craft a playable level that results in a proposal message accessed by the player, which in this case is Amy. Lead Level Designer Colin Campbell viewed it as an opportunity to share a mutual joy with the couple.

Said Campbell:

“I love being married. It’s my favorite thing about my life, and it’s a huge amount of what I enjoy about living, but being a videogame designer doesn’t often give me the opportunity to help someone else have a marriage.”

“This is rare and something that’s almost never going to happen to anyone in the industry, so as soon as I saw the opportunity, I jumped right on it.”

The team meticulously worked on everything from the writing, including references to the couple's relationship throughout the level, and making sure no programming bugs would occur to ensure a seamless experience. The developers and Jackie got Amy to the studio under the guise of winning a fake contest to tour the studio and play an early version of the next iteration of the series.

Jackie brought Amy into the studio to play the game, surrounded by developers pretending to record data on Amy's playthrough. At the end of the level, Amy's character walked up to a lone console and clicked on the console with a message from BioWare.

BioWare's message:

"Dear Amy, Jackie would like to ask you something.

Love,

All of us at BioWare"

Mass effectJackie then dropped down to one knee, took out the ring and proposed. Read the full story and see if Jackie said yes, on BioWare's blog.

Campbell said:

"There aren’t many situations in videogame development where you get the chance to step back and do something like this for somebody else."

"I think videogames are powerful and an incredible form of art and entertainment and interaction, but they don’t often get two people married. There are only a few stories like that in history, and it’s awesome to be part of one of them."

The Mass Effect series is known for allowing its players to pursue same-sex relationships with NPC's in the game. The studio is also introducing a gay male party member in Dragon Age: Inquisition that is set for release next week, Nov. 18 on both current and last generation systems.

Lady Gaga Invites Fan to Propose to His Boyfriend Onstage: VIDEO

Lady Gaga Jay and Shaun proposal

Love her or hate her, Lady Gaga has been an extremely vocal supporter of the LGBT community from virtually day one, so much so that she's even pissed off the Russian government with her support. (Yes, Madonna has done so, too. She is also awesome.) Last Tuesday in Manchester she continued her trend of support by hosting a gay marriage proposal on-stage during her concert. After getting her heel un-stuck from her latex outfit, she called her friend Jay up on stage and telling Jay's boyfriend Shaun that he might have a question for him. And then the crowd went berserk.

Google's New Android Ad Features Blink-and-You'll-Miss-It Gay Marriage Proposal: VIDEO

Ad

Google is rolling out the latest version of its popular Android operating system codenamed “Lollipop” along with a new tagline: “Android: Be Together. Not The Same.”

The tagline is a direct response to competitors who have criticized the the company’s phone OS for being fragmented. In a new ad for Android, however, Google is owning that technological diversity and translating it into real world metaphors.

“Good things happen when everybody’s invited,” Google SVP of Android and apps Sundai Pichai wrote in a blog post. “And the best part is that every time someone new joins in, things get more interesting, unexpected, and wonderful for all of us.”

The ad, which is composed mainly of crowdsourced footage from YouTube, features Alex Unick proposing to his fiancée Zach Udko. Though the clip of the proposal is quick, it’s a visible continuation of Google’s commitment to LGBT-inclusive advertisement. Last year, Mountain View-based company reached across the globe to help gay and lesbian couples in France and Chile get married by connecting them to a Belgian mayor who would officiate their weddings via Google Hangout.

Gay Marriage Proposal Of The Day: Senator Kelvin Atkinson And Sherwood Howard - VIDEO

Atkinson

Nevada state senator Kelvin Atkinson has proposed to his partner Sherwood Howard at a Freedom Nevada event celebrating the striking down of the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, reports CNN.

Last year, Republican Atrkinson came out during a debate prior to a vote repealing a constitutional provision passed by voters in 2002 banning same-sex marriage

Atkinson said that his proposal “just came out...I proposed to him on stage in front of everyone.”

During his speech, Atkinson called Howard on to the stage to propose: 1007TheCenter12_t653

“Woody I know it has been six years. They haven’t always been great, but we have been great partners and as a lot of you know in a lot of my political work [you are] the one person that I trust the most, to be there with me, to be there for me, to be that confidant, to be my friend and my partner, so I’m saying it in front of everybody, will you marry me?’

The couple have been together for about 6 1/2 years and planned on getting married, but didn't want to do it in another state.

Despite the good news, yesterday we reported that same-sex marriage in Nevada is once again on hold after Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy issued an order stating that his stay of the 9th Circuit's ruling only applies to Idaho.
