Gay Iconography: Our Favorite Moments of Out Hollywood Heartthrob Matt Bomer

Bomer

You won’t get too much of an argument calling Matt Bomer one of the hottest actors today, and not only because he’s got those Hollywood handsome good looks. The star of screens both big and small will be heating things up this summer in Magic Mike XXL and then bringing the scares in Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Hotel.

Bomer came out publicly in 2012 while accepting the New Generation Arts and Activism Award from the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. In his acceptance speech, he said “And I'd really especially like to thank my beautiful family: Simon, Kit, Walker, Henry. Thank you for teaching me what unconditional love is. You will always be my proudest accomplishment,” acknowledging his husband and three children.

His coming out set rumors about the actor’s sexuality to rest, but it also raised the age-old questions about openly gay actors playing straight heartthrobs. There was a lot of momentum to cast Bomer as the lead in the film adaptation of kinky housewife trash-lit Fifty Shades of Grey. (The role eventually went to Jamie Dornan.) Bret Easton Ellis, who was once in the running to be the screenwriter for the film, said that Bomer couldn’t play the role because of his sexuality. He tweeted “Okay I'll say it. Matt Bomer isn't right for Christian Grey because he is openly gay. He's great for other roles but this is too big a game.”

Additionally, novelist Jackie Collins, claimed Bomer missed out on playing Superman after coming out. She told Gaydar Radio, “Matt Bomer, who is the most gorgeous looking guy and the star of White Collar, he was up for the role of Superman. He had not come out of the closet but people in the know knew he was gay. His audition tape went in and he called up the agent. Someone didn’t like him and told them he was gay. They said, 'No, no, we can’t cast you.' The reason he didn’t get cast was because he was gay.”

Still, Bomer’s kept himself pretty busy. Take a look at some of our favorite Matt moments, AFTER THE JUMP

Matt Bomer, Cheyenne Jackson to Star in 'American Horror Story: Hotel' Alongside Lady Gaga

Ahs

Matt Bomer and Cheyenne Jackson are joining the cast of American Horror Story: Hotel, the Lady Gaga-starring upcoming fifth season of Ryan Murphy's hit FX series, Vulture reports:

"I can't confirm or deny that there may be a romantic relationship," Bomer said of his role alongside Gaga. But he did say he'd be willing to do crazy stuff, which is always promising: "I'm down. I only got to tip my toes in the freaky-deaky nature. I'm ready to go in the deep end, baby."

Fan favorite Jessica Lange, however, will not be returning for this new season set to debut in October, EW reports:

“Yes, I’m done,” she said. “We’ve had a great run here. I have absolutely loved doing these four characters that I’ve had the opportunity to play. In all the madness, I’ve loved the writers, my actors, Ryan and the whole, I mean, insanity of it, shooting here, shooting in New Orleans, the stories, everything.”

This isn't the first time Bomer and Jackson have collaborated with Ryan Murphy. Bomer starred alongside Mark Ruffalo in the award winning HBO film The Normal Heart and Jackson had a role on the second and third season of Glee

Matt Bomer to Play Montgomery Clift in HBO Biopic

Matt Bomer and Montgomery Clift

Montgomery Clift was a prolific film actor in the '50s who starred in classic films like The Heiress, Red River, From Here to Eternity and Judgment at Nuremberg, and was a close friend of Elizabeth Taylor before his death from a heart attack in 1965 at the age of 45. He was also a tormented, closeted gay man, a fact that was unknown until a pair of posthumous biographies were released in the '70s.

HBO will be releasing a biopic of the star titled Monty Clift, starring Matt Bomer from The Normal Heart and the upcoming Magic Mike: XXL. The biopic is still in pre-production and is scheduled to air later this year.

'American Horror Story: Freak Show' RECAP - 'Pink Cupcakes' [Spoilers]

Bomer

THAT's more like it. I stand by my assessment that the Edward Mordrake episodes were fairly weak. For a Halloween horror spectacular, the two-part story was only scary to those who have a crippling fear of exposition. Unlike tonight's episode, which was tense and disturbing and also sexy and even at times funny. ("I'd rather be boiled in oil than be on television" is no "KNOTTY PINE?!" but it was still the kind of line that only Jessica Lange could deliver properly.)

Tonight also marked Matt Bomer's American Horror Story debut, and it certainly was ... memorable.

Let’s start with the Dandy story of the evening. But before we get into all the terrifying, twisted action, can we just take a minute to ogle appreciate Finn Wittrock?

I'll save the spoilers (and more hunky undies GIFs) for AFTER THE JUMP ...
