Openly Gay Candidate in Run-off Election in Gainesville Today

Andy Towle April 13, 2010

Lowe

Openly gay candidate Craig Lowe, who was the target of an ugly "no homo mayor" campaign by local church Dove Ministries, is facing a run-off election today:

"Craig Lowe, a 52-year-old city commissioner, and Don Marsh, 51, who owns a window-cleaning business, are the remaining contenders in the mayoral runoff election.

Last time around, Lowe got 40.13 percent of the vote, while Marsh got 29.13.

Pam Carpenter, Alachua County's elections supervisor, said more people voted early and sent in absentee ballots for the runoff than for the general election in March.

"I'm hoping we see the same thing at the polling place," Carpenter said Monday.

Only 14.02 percent of the city's voters cast ballots last time, well short of the 25 percent turnout she hoped for."

If you know folks in Gainesville, I'd urge them to get out and vote.
