Fred Karger Launches Search For Maggie Gallagher's Mysterious Husband

LGBT activist and quixotic Republican presidential candidate Fred Karger sent out an email today wondering where, oh where National Organization for Marriage founder Maggie Gallagher's husband has gone.

I've included the text from an email he sent on the subject today, AFTER THE JUMP, as well as some video of Karger and Gallagher on Thomas Roberts' MSNBC show.

Is Maggie Gallagher Divorced?
Moved to Washington 3 years Ago Without Mystery Husband

I was on Thomas Roberts’ show MSNBC Live with the founder of the National Organization for Marriage, Maggie Gallagher. We were on MSNBC so she could try and defend the treasure trove of “Confidential” NOM documents that had just been uncovered as a result of the 2009 investigation that I got launched against NOM in Maine.
Maggie and I were in separate studios although we met afterwards for this photo and a chance to visit.  I asked Maggie if she was still living in New York, and she told me that she moved to Washington, DC nearly three years ago.  What about her husband Roman Srivastav?  She allegedly married this East Indian man 19 years ago after living as an unwed mother for 11 years.  No one has ever seen Maggie with Raman.  Wonder if they really did get married?  If so, maybe so he could get a green card?

Maggie the *Bigocrite

(Big-o-crite \ˈbig-ə-ˌkrit\ – a person who is both a bigot and a hypocrite.)

For the past 15 years Maggie has written books, columns and talked to anyone who would listen about the necessity of kids having a mother and a father (even though she didn’t follow her own advice for over a decade).
In 2008 Maggie took it up a notch and started the National Organization for Marriage with $3 million dollars to qualify and pass California’s Proposition 8 to take marriage away from millions of Californians.  NOM has been labeled a “Hate Group.”

Where’s Your Wedding Ring, Maggie??

According to WikiAnswers only 9.3% of American women don’t wear a wedding ring, a pretty small number.  Certainly this national champion of marriage whose twitter name is @MaggieMarriage would wear a wedding ring if she was really married.

Tell the Truth, Maggie

I first became suspicious when you spoke in Rhode Island two years ago at NOM’s "Celebrate Marriage & Family Day."  If ever there was a day to appear with your husband that was it.
I even scoured Google images, not one photo of you and Raman.  NOM’s Brian Brown is all over Google.  There are lots of photos of Brian with his wife and family.

I smell a rat, Maggie. You are the author of a book is titled “The Case for Marriage: Why Married People are Happier, Healthier, and Better off Financially (on Amazon for only $1.00).” Makes sense to me. But why are you so hell-bent on making sure that those of us who happen to be gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender can’t marry?

Put up, or Shut up

Let’s see your marriage license, Maggie.  Better yet, let’s see your husband!

  4. And what happened to her first husband (the father of her child)?
    Did he die?
Did they get, Heaven forbid, DIVORCED?
Did he come out of the closet?

I think Miss "I'll preach about what marriage is" has some questions to answer.

  5. @JimmyD There was a pretty good article on Salon that included comments from her son's father.

  6. She chewed off her husband's head during copulation.

  7. Very telling that there is NO mention of Gallagher's husband or marital status on her Wikipedia page. Public figures of Maggie's "stature" monitor their Wiki pages very, very carefully and correct any misinformation. So, even though Wiki is crowd-sourced and ostensibly open to anyone who wants to edit an entry, I have to believe that her marriage to Srivastri is not on there because she doesn't want it to be part of an "official" public profile.

Someone with Wiki skillz should get on her page and update her entry to include the Karger controversy--or edit her bio to say that while she claims to be married, she doesn't wear a wedding ring and no one has seen her husband in public---and see how she reacts. This could get really interesting.

  8. @JimmyD - Maggie Gallagher was never married to the father of her child. He ditched her when she got pregnant, then later they tried to reconcile and briefly lived together before he broke up with her (again), and hasn't seen either mother or child since. She raised her child as a single mother for 11 years before marrying Roman Srivastav.

However, the father of her child is now married (to a woman) and has his own children. He has not come out, though Maggie seems to be reacting as if she was dumped by a closeted gay man who later came out.

  9. The Salon article is here:

It's interesting to see that the Wikipedia entry implies that Raman Srivastav is the father of her son ("She married Raman Srivastav in 1993 and they have one son together.") If you look at the edit history, it looks like there have been frequent edits to remove "vandalism."

  13. Angry anti-gay activist Gallagher never got to marry the man with whom she fornicated. Since that time, she continues to attack and punish the rest of us. How long will her seething anger (and greed/gluttony)continue to harm millions of Americans? And when will she repent, seek Jesus and ask Him to remove this broiling anger from her heart, thereby allowing the rest of us to live in peace?

  14. Priests are not married either and they spout off too. Normally they don't have children though, so her "family" thesis is a bit weak. She should take a less practical line to avoid the charge of hypocrisy. It's not practicality that motivates her, its theology.

  15. Jorell: I think you nailed it.

Correction: It's not practicality that motivates her, it's MONEY!

  18. The Salon profile suggested that she and her husband have a rocky relationship to say the least.

  19. "Bigocrite" is, indeed, a great term, but in Maggie's case, I think the term is "Hippo-crite."

  22. Fred thank you for bring this to light.. My biggest complaint about the way prop8 l was handled was that the LGBT community , the press and media NEVER confronted Maggie Gallagher about her "husband" Raman..its time for it now.. EXPOSE her to ever state where NOM is operating...Turn the light on this roach....There has to be public records of her marriage and tax returns...

  23. I'm guessing her "husband" had no idea how costly his green card would be. I mean, imagine the world knowing you were Maggie's husband?! I'd stay in hiding as well.

  24. I understand Karger being upset at social liberals being outnumbered in the Republican party - and the fact that he is treated like something of a museum-piece curiosity by most Republicans for running for President as an openly gay Republican. But I don't see what his point is here. The case for gay marriage has nothing to do with whether Maggie is married or not or why her husband prefers to remain out of the limelight. This ridiculous obsession with trying to find a smoking gun only makes Karger look petty. And Maggie is no hypocrite for having a child out of wedlock. The pregnancy wasn't planned. An abortion would have made her a murderer in the eyes of the church. You do the best you can with the circumstances you have. As for why she lived as a "single mother" for 11 years when claiming that children need a father - well, you can't get a husband or a father for your child as easily as you purchase a piece of jewelry.

Maggie's critics can get absurd sometimes.

  25. Mary:
Maggie had already committed a significant sin in the eyes of the RC Church by having sex out of wedlock, then committed another after she and the father of her son reconciled and lived together (also out of wedlock). It's telling that it's OK to ignore the former, but side with the church on abortion. It's the same old crap. I'll pick and choose what teachings I'll abide with and which I won't.

Were her views on family and the necessity of a father in raising a child born during her years as a single parent? Guess so, since it didn't appear to be an influence when she got knocked up (or was the pregnancy planned?)

I can appreciate that her husband might want to shy away from the public spotlight that she has shining on her, but an appearance once in a while to validate that she is actually married might not hurt, either. After all, it's kind of the same thing the birthers raise about Obama's citizenship, isn't it?
