Towleroad Talking Points: Marriage Equality in New Mexico?

A look back at today's top stories

GAY ISSUES

Santa Fe, New Mexico Mayor David Coss is breaking ground by attempting to offer gay couples marriage licenses. Coss cites the fact that the city's definition of marriage is gender neutral. More power to him! Citizens in Finland are tired of being the only Scandinavian country that doesn't allow same-sex marriage and are attempting to force their Parliament's hand

Better late than never; after it was reported earlier today that Chipotle was continuing to support the Boy Scouts despite their anti-gay policies, the restaurant chain has pulled out of a Boy Scout event in Utah. The New Jersey teen whose coming out went viral is hoping lawmakers in the state take steps to ban "ex-gay" reparative therapy. And it seems the ACLU might be coming to the rescue of some bullied students in California

WINGNUTTERY

After being suspended over a rash of homophobic tweets, CNN contributor Roland Martin will be leaving CNN soon and is blaming Jeff Zucker. Also Rachel Maddow is skeptical that the GOP can actually achieve that re-branding they talked about after CPAC.

Lawmaker Begins Long Process to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage in Nevada

The march toward marriage equality has begun in Nevada, the Las Vegas Sun reports:

NevadaSen. Tick Segerblom, D-Las Vegas, introduced a Senate Joint Resolution that would repeal the section of Nevada’s constitution that says “only a marriage between a male and female person shall be recognized.”

The repeal would start the lengthy process by which Nevada could legalize same-sex marriage. The resolution needs to pass by majority vote in the Legislature this year and again in 2015 before it would be placed on the 2016 ballot. If the majority of voters in Nevada decide to repeal the marriage definition, then the Legislature could act in 2017 to legalize same-sex marriage in statute.

Vanessa Spinaloza, lobbyist for the ACLU, worked with Segerblom on the resolution and said she’s confident that a majority of legislators support the repeal.

Snooki and JWoww Will 'Kill' the Supreme Court if They Don't Strike Down Prop 8 and DOMA: VIDEO

Jwoww_snooki

Vanity Fair has the scoop from Saturday night's GLAAD awards:

Just days before the Supreme Court will be considering the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8, both of which prohibit same-sex marriage, the Jersey Shore stars hope the justices strike down both. “They better pass it,” JWoww said. “They better. Or I’ll come for them.” Snooki concurred: “Yeah. I will find you, and I will kill you,” she said.

I don't think Sonia Sotomayor has much to worry about but Scalia might.

And if you're interested in what they had to say about Anderson Cooper and Madonna, Boy Culture got that scoop, AFTER THE JUMP...

NJ Teen Who Came Out at School Assembly Begs Lawmakers to Ban Harmful 'Ex-Gay' Therapy: VIDEO

Rudolph

As I reported yesterday, New Jersey is considering a bill that would ban so-called gay conversion therapy and held hearings before the Senate Health Committee. The bill, S2278, would ban licensed therapists from trying to turn gay kids straight. The committee advanced the bill in a 7-1 vote.

Among those testifying was Parsippany high school senior Jacob Rudolph, whose speech coming out to his entire class at an awards show assembly went viral on YouTube in January.

Said Rudoph to the panel in a powerful speech:

“What disturbs me the most is that our government would allow orientation-conversion organizations to subject children to such so-called therapy. It is hard enough for LGBT teens to accept that their sexual orientation differentiates them from their classmates. Consequentially, I cannot fathom how emotionally scarring it must be for these kids to be told they are somehow broken and are then manipulated to reject their innate sexual preference and ‘become’ heterosexual again. What strikes me as the most cruel facet of this practice is that these young people cannot defend themselves from being subjected to this harmful practice.”
