A look back at today's top stories

WINGNUTTERY

NOM leader and all-around nut Brian Brown continues to bury his head in the sand and pretend that he is not fighting a losing battle. One Million Moms really need to find a hobby or something to fill their day other than getting upset about really stupid things. The latest call to action comes as a result of a commercial that implies that a man is shaving his body hair. What is this world coming to?! And YouTube sensation Antoine Dodson has given up on being gay and is looking for a wife.

ENTERTAINMENT

In a behind the scenes look at Ryan Gosling's new film, Only God Forgives, we get treated to some sexual discussion between him and his director and a lot of bare Gosling bicep. Also a graphic music video from a gay Canadian director that depicts a bullied student being crucified is causing quite the stir in Canada and France.

VIDEOS OF THE DAY

Jason Collins' twin brother Jarron sat down with ESPN's Outside the Lines today and discussed not only his brother's coming out but also how anti-gay players should behave toward him. And the video of Reese Witherspoon's recent bizarre drunken arrest in Atlanta has been released and you're right Reese, it is totally "beyond"

Oprah Sits Down with Jason Collins and His Family: VIDEOS

Cins_oprah

Oprah sits down with Jason Collins and his family this Sunday on Oprah's Next Chapter and she has posted a few preview clips from the interview, one in which Collins talks about the stigma being attached to being gay in the African-American community and why that added another dimension to his story. Collins also mentions his gay uncle and the importance of having a role model there for him.

Oprah also asks Collins' parents if there was a "releasing of the dream" of the idea they had had for their son that he would be "walking down the aisle" with (a woman)..."

Conservative Pundit Ben Shapiro: If You Think Jason Collins is a Big Deal, You Hate America - VIDEO

Shapiro

Earlier this week, Breitbart editor Ben Shapiro tweeted "So Jason Collins is a hero because he's gay? Out standard for heroism has dropped quite a bit since Normandy."

Piers Morgan asked him about the remarks on his show last night, and Shapiro replied:

"Let me ask you something. Why do you hate America so much that you think this is such a homophobic country that when Jason Collins comes out it is the biggest deal in the history of humanity? President Obama has to personally call him to congratulate him."

Answers Morgan: "I think you might be homophobic simply because you said, why is Jason Collins a hero because he's gay? Why sneer at a guy for coming out when he's being courageous?"

Says Shapiro: "I'm Jewish. I wear a yarmulke on TV. There's a lot of anti-semitism...Being who you are in 2013 in America is what America is about. It is not heroic to be who you are publicly. I'm glad for Jason Collins if he feels that he's going to live a happier life now. But it does not make you a hero to be who you are."

Minnesota Marriage Equality Vote Could Come as Early As Next Week

The AP reports that momentum is happening in Minnesota toward marriage equality and bills pending there could see some action soon:

MinnesotaLawmakers could vote as early as next week on the bill to make same-sex marriage legal in Minnesota on Aug. 1, though votes have not yet been scheduled in either the House or Senate. While supporters appear to have the needed votes nailed down in the Senate, the House is less certain. A group of about a dozen rural House Democrats have been reluctant to commit, hailing from districts where voters strongly backed last fall's failed constitutional gay marriage ban.

The report comes as supporters pick up a key House vote from a Democratic representative in a conservative district. No House Republicans have said they would vote yes on the measure though at least one Senate Republican, Branden Petersen, has said he will.

Throughout U.S. history, New England has consistently had a revolutionary spirit and recognized that the greatest American values are respect and equality under the law.  It should come as no surprise that this spirit is still alive today.”

RoadA Q&A on gay divorce: "In a traditional divorce, both parents maintain conventional parental rights. It’s just easier to define the rights of the parents in a heterosexual marriage. With civil unions, if a second-parent adoption is not in place, the matter can become seriously complex. One parent has to prove they have served as a psychological parent to the child. It’s a long, expensive and complicated process. During that time, the biological parent has all the rights. That’s why gay marriage would be so awesome. It would simplify rights and responsibilities so that the dissolution process for any couple, gay or straight, would carry the same child custody and parenting rights."

In fact, 582 of the burly mammals have died so far in 2013—as much as 19 percent of the entire adult population—thanks to a shrinking supply of food and the proliferation of deadly algae blooms like red tide in state waters."
