Methodist Pastor Frank Schaefer, Defrocked For Presiding At Son’s Gay Wedding, Reinstated Following Appeal - VIDEO

Schaefer

Methodist pastor Frank Schaefer, who was defrocked last year for officiating at his son Tim’s gay wedding in 2007, has been reinstated after winning an appeal.

Until his defrocking, Mr Schaefer had been the pastor of Zion United Methodist Church of Iona in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

A United Methodist Church appeals committee deemed the defrocking of Schaefer, who is the father of three gay children, to be an illegitimate effort to punish the pastor for his refusal to promise not to preside at another same-sex wedding.

Although the appeals panel did not question Mr. Schaefer’s guilt and upheld a 30-day suspension as punishment for violations of church law, it ruled that defrocking was wrong because “clergy can only be punished for what they have been convicted of doing in the past, not for what they may or may not do in the future.” The panel also decided that Schaefer should get back pay dating to when the suspension ended in December.

Speaking to The New York Times, Schaefer said that the committee’s decision sends a clear message that “change is on the way.”

On his website, he said:

“I can't even begin to describe how meaningful this "refrocking" is to me. I never did understand the severity of my punishment for an act of love for my son Tim. The committee of appeals understood that my defrocking sought to penalize me not for what I did but for what I might do in the future.”

However, according to Reverend Rob Renfroe, president of Good News, a United Methodist organization that opposes gay marriage:

“When we have people who are not only disobedient, but who find a way to not have to keep the covenant they have made with the rest of the church, it helps us see that maybe we are so different that we’ve come to the end of the road together.”

Schaefer will resume his pastoral work next month with Isla Vista Student Ministry in Santa Barbara, California.

FOX News Contributor Says Comments on Santa Barbara Killer's Gay Impulses Were ‘Misunderstood’

Ludwig

Reality tv psychoterapist Dr. Robi Ludwig, who over the weekend made the baseless claim that Santa Barbara shooter Elliot Rodger may have gone on his deadly rampage because he couldn’t cope with his “homosexual impulses,” has now taken to Facebook to try and clarify those remarks made on Fox News.

Writes Ludwig:

I was misunderstood on @FoxNews this weekend, when I was asked to hypothesize several factors which could have triggered ‪#‎ElliotRoger‬ 's spree killing. I in NO way meant to indicate being a homosexual or having homosexual impulses is a cause for spree killing. My job on @judgejeanine was to asses several possible triggers for #ElliotRoger and his behavior ‪#‎peace‬ ‪#‎forequalrights‬ However, I apologize to all those who felt offended. That was never my intention.

Basically she’s just sorry if her groundless speculation led audiences to also speculate on her lack of professionalism and intelligence. That was never her intention.

Jared Leto Handles Heckler Accusing Him of 'Trans Misogny' for Playing Rayon: VIDEO

Leto

Jared Leto was heckled at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Tuesday night by an audience member, who yelled, "You don't deserve an award. Trans misogyny does not deserve an award."

The audience member was referring to Leto's critically-acclaimed and Oscar-nominated portrayal of Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club, for which he has already won a Golden Globe.

Leto responded:

"What problem do you have with ? Because I'm a man I don't deserve to play that part so you would hold a role against someone who happened to be gay or lesbian - they can't play a straight part?"

The audience member then complained that straight men win awards for playing trans characters.

Leto replied: "Then you make sure that people that are gay, people that aren't straight, people like the Rayons of the world would never have the opportunity to turn the tables and explore parts that aren't central to who they are..."

UC Santa Barbara Tennis Coach Simon Thibodeau: 'I'm Gay'

The NYT profiles the coming out of Santa Barbara's women's tennis team, Simon Thibodeau:

Thibodeau“I’m gay,” he finally said.

There was awkward silence, mostly stemming from surprise. One player applauded. The rest smiled, shrugged and wondered about the summer schedule.

“No one thought it was a big deal,” said Erica Cano, captain of last year’s team and now an assistant coach. “All this big buildup, then: ‘Oh. O.K.’ ”

To Thibodeau’s college players, perhaps, it was not a big deal. But to him, it was a life-altering moment after years of inner turmoil. And to those in college coaching and tennis, Thibodeau’s public pronouncement of homosexuality promises to make him an unassuming pioneer.

“It feels so free,” Thibodeau said. “I’m not hiding anymore. If you ask, I’ll tell.”

According to the newspaper there are just a handful of out NCAA Division 1 head coaches - "Portland State women’s basketball coach, Sherri Murrell; the Kennesaw State men’s (and former women’s) tennis coach, T. J. Greggs; and Kirk Walker, the longtime softball coach at Oregon State, now an assistant at U.C.L.A."

It all makes Thibodeau, 40, a successful college coach with deep ties in international tennis, a candidate to become a public spokesman for barrier breaking in sports and a private counselor to those struggling to make sense of their feelings.
