Ben Carson and his new campaign chair, retired Army Major General Robert F. Dees, sat down with Jake Tapper on CNN yesterday and Tapper asked about Carson's statements about “social experimentation” and the military, more specifically women in combat roles and LGBT people serving openly.

Dees said they would have to consider the role of women in combat, and the physical realities therein: “Everyone is not good at everything.”

Carson recently reiterated his opposition to transgender service members and expressed an interest in returning to the days of “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” and Tapper took on that topic as well.

Dees, ignoring the years of military studies that preceded the lifting of ‘Don't Ask, Don't Tell' and the lack of any current evidence that it has disrupted anything, suggested that the current policy of gays serving openly in the military is not working:

“Well, I think the first priority again is cohesion, and the second priority would be that the commander-in-chief listen to the best military advice, so on a number of these social issues the best military advice has been thwarted and the administration has said, ‘Do this, do this, do this,' apart from military and defense considerations as a priority.”

Tapper then asked Carson if he would consider returning to a ban on gay servicemembers:

“One of the things that I learned in a long medical career is that you make decisions based on evidence, and not on ideology. So, yes, I would be willing to sit down with people from both sides and examine the evidence and make decisions based on what the evidence shows.”
