Gay Catholic: 'I Still Want to Have a Family. It’s Just Going to Look Different' - VIDEO

Carlo

When Carlo, a gay Catholic from Sydney, Australia, told his aunt he was gay, she began sobbing uncontrollably.

When she finally calmed down, she explained that she needed to grieve the loss of the image she built up for him of having a wife and children.

"I said to her, 'I get that, but I want to make sure you understand: I still want that,'" Carlo recalls. "'I still want to have a family, but it's just going to look different. It's going to be with a man as opposed to a woman.'"

Carlo tells his coming out story as part of Nathan Manske's "I'm From Driftwood" project. He says he didn't come out until 25, largely because of his Catholic upbringing, including his image of the perfect family as a father, mother and children.

Finally, he began telling his friends he was gay, but he knew he hadn't really come out until he told his parents. He did it as they were driving to church for a Catholic mass.

"I said to them, 'Mom, dad, I'm attracted to men," he recalls. "There was a bit of silence for a moment, but Dad was the first person to chime up and say 'Carlo, as long as you're happy, we're happy,'" Carlo says. "And mom soon thereafter said: 'You can't change who you are. This is you, and we want you to be you.' So I was actually surprised that they didn't have any more questions."

Carlo later explained to his parents that he didn't plan to follow the church's teaching that you can be gay as long as you're celibate, which was slightly harder for them to understand. A few weeks later, he was making cake decorations with his aunt.

"My auntie jokingly said, 'Maybe you could make some of these pink rose cake decorations for your girlfriend,'" Carlo recalls. "I said, 'Well, that will never happen, because I'm actually gay.'"

Once his aunt stopped crying, she said she was grateful that he told her because it would allow them to have a deeper relationship.

"What I've learned is that I can be gay and I can be Catholic and the two can actually build on each other, and strengthen both parts of my identity," Carlo says.

LGBT Stories: Coming Out But Keeping The Faith

Gabe Neitz TR

After coming out in high school, Gabriel found classmates and even the football players telling him how awesome he was. Other aspects of his life, however, were much less accepting.

“God was a huge, huge influence on my life. He still is. And that’s one of the reasons why I couldn’t come to terms with who I was, and it took so long because I felt like a horrible person.”

Guilt from his mother, who is a minister, and fear of God forced Gabriel back in the closet. Somewhat ironically, it was Gabriel’s praying and evolved belief in what God wants that led him back out of the closet and to his own personal acceptance.

“I feel that all the nights I spent crying and really begging and pleading for God to take these feelings I have for men away...He didn’t. And I don’t believe God can sit up there and see this young boy crying and in so much pain and not do something about it. So I feel like God accepts me for who I am.”

LGBT Stories: Father Comes Out After 28 Years Of Marriage

Gill TR

BY NATHAN MANSKE

Gill was married to his wife for 28 years and had a few children. On the outside he seemed to have had it all.

“Going back 15 years ago I thought I was happy having the big house and the car and the vacations and the perfect relationship and social life,” Gill remembers before adding, ”but something was missing.”

After realizing he was gay and coming out to a friend as well as his therapist, Gill went through “a complete deconstruction of my life, as I describe it, so I had to rebuild emotionally, familially, financially...had to rebuild it all over again.”

In our latest video, Gill shares his wife’s and children’s reactions to his coming out, which ultimately sends an inspiring message to older folks still in the closet: it’s never too late to be your true self.

LGBT Stories: Coming Out In A Cuban Family

Nicholas Pineiro TR

BY NATHAN MANSKE

Guestblogger On the Tour, I especially loved hearing stories where I learn even a little about new cultures. That's why I was excited when Nicholas, who grew up in Little Havana in Miami, wanted to share his story. With Nicholas's story, I never knew where it was going until the very end. The way he sets up Cuban culture, the workplace discrimination, then finally the moment when he tells his parents...you're waiting to find out if it ends happily or not right up until the last bit of his story.

LGBT Stories: It's Okay To Be Gay In Montana

Mark dubois TR

BY NATHAN MANSKE

Guestblogger Of the nearly 170 stories we collected on the Tour, I think this one is my favorite setting. The mountains, the horses, the mobile home with the rainbow decoration waving in the wind, all as the backdrop to Mark talking about how it's okay to be gay in Montana. Oh, and of course the chihuahua who insisted on sitting in my lap for the duration of the filming.
