Bigoted Christian Baker Attends Anti-Gay Conference, Explains What's Wrong With The U.S. - VIDEO

Melissa klein

Melissa Klein, co-owner of an Oregon bakery that last year refused to make a wedding cake for a lesbian couple, broke down in tears last week during a panel at the anti-gay Values Voter Summit, reports TPM.

Values Voter Summit (VVS) is an annual conference and who's who of anti-gay bigots organised by the Family Research Council, which is listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group.

ValueIn January 2013, the Kleins declined to make a wedding cake for Rachel Cryer and Laurel Bowman who responded by filing a civil rights complaint against Sweet Cakes by Melissa. Officials in Oregon eventually ruled that the bakery violated Cryer’s and Bowman’s civil rights. The Klein’s took the decision to close down their shop rather than do business with gay couples.

Talking at VVS about how she loves to be involved in (heterosexual) customers’ weddings, Klein said:

“For me personally when I would sit down with them I just would want to know everything about her wedding. I'd want to know about the flowers, her dress, the centerpieces, her colors, the way her hair is going to be. I would even want to talk about 'where are you going on your honeymoon?'"

Klein’s husband Aaron added:

“To be told they’re going to force me to convey a message other than what I want to convey — it flies in the face of the Constitution. It’s a violation of my conscience. It’s a violation of my religious freedom. It’s horrible to see your own government doing this to you….We had to shut the shop down. Melissa does very limited cakes out of our house. I mean we're facing in excess of $150,000 of damages for this, just for simply standing by my first amendment rights."

Following her appearance at Values Voter Summit, Klein yesterday took to Facebook to quote anti-gay activist Rick Warren's explanation of the “two huge lies” contemporary culture has embraced:

“Our culture has accepted 2 huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone’s lifestyle, you must fear or hate them. Second is that to love someone means that you must agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don’t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate.”

Anti-Gay Activist Mat Staver Is Not (Repeat, Not) Anti-Gay - VIDEO

Mat staver

Wingnut Liberty Counsel Chairman Mat Staver is very unhappy that he is perceived to be an anti-gay bigot, reports Right Wing Watch.

This is the same Liberty Counsel that has been listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and the same Mat Staver who was listed by Human Rights Campaign in a new report that exposes some of the most vitriolic activists in the U.S. promoting anti-gay bigotry abroad.

Nonetheless, at this weekend's annual Values Voter Summit, organized by anti-gay bigots Family Research Council, Staver fumed over a letter sent by various civil rights and LGBT groups to Republican National Committee chair Reince Priebus, asking party members to not participate in the conference, citing the anti-gay extremism of its sponsors.

Liberty Counsel is among the hate-in’s sponsors but Staver is not very happy about being labeled an anti-gay extremist.

According to Staver, he is being attacked merely for believing marriage is “the union of one man and one woman."

"For me believing in something that is that obvious. I am considered by some groups to be a hater. But I hate no one. I hate no one, but I believe in God's truth and I will not be silent in the face of intimidation."

In an effort to prove that he is not an extremist, Staver goes on to liken himself to Jesus when he turned over the tables of the money changers in the temple.  With a flourish, he also declares that the very idea of same-sex marriage “is an absolute lie from the very pit of Hell” - and of course, dangerous to children.

But he’s not homophobic.

Liberty Council also hosted a panel discussion at the Values Voter Summit warning that the U.S. "nanny state" will soon start targeting anti-gay Christians for NSA surveillance.

Michele Bachmann Clarifies Gay Marriage 'Is Boring, Not an Issue' Comment, Reminds People She's Still A Bigot - VIDEO

Republican and anti-gay activist Michele Bachmann has clarified comments made at last week’s right-wing Values Voter Summit conference that same-sex marriage is “not an issue” and is “in fact...boring,” reports WND.

Activist Michelangelo Signorile reported that Bachmann made the comments in an interview he conducted with her on Sirius XM Progress.

However, in a follow-up interview, Bachmann backtracked, claiming she meant that same-sex marriage “won’t be the issue that drives the 2014 election”:

“I told the reporter it’s getting boring having them only press this issue with Republicans while ignoring Democrats. The media loves to divide us on this issue. They look for something all the time. I said nothing different. I’m the woman who carried the traditional marriage amendment in Minnesota, and I stand firm in my belief that marriage should be between one man and one woman.”

The American Family Association’s resident wingnut Bryan Fischer - loves Burger King, hates gay sex - said that the issue of marriage equality is “far from settled”:

“Unfortunately, there are people in the conservative movement who have sort of given up. There are even evangelical leaders sending signals that the battle is over, that the battle is lost. ‘We’ll never be able to capture the millennials. They’re gone.’ I think it’s way premature for that. You know, when the homosexual lobby was [lost at the ballot in 31 states on marriage, they] didn’t quit. They didn’t give up. They didn’t do it. They didn’t give up, and neither are we.”

Always to be relied on for inflammatory hate speech that shows an absolute lack of any human compassion, in July, Bachmann claimed that gay people want to "abolish age of consent laws...so that adults will be able to freely prey on little children sexually."

E.W. Jackson: 'God Ordained' That 1,000 Years From Now Same-Sex Marriage Will Not Exist - VIDEO

E.W. Jackson

True to form, failed 2013 Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia E.W. Jackson - he has previously claimed to be even better friends with god than the Pope - this time spoke for god himself, lashing out against same-sex marriage at the closing of the Values Voter Summit last Friday, reports Right Wing Watch.

The annual Values Voter Summit, organized by anti-gay bigots Family Research Council and backed by the Republican Party, featured a who’s who of homophobic wingnuts including Michelle Bachmann, Jason & David Benham, Michelle Duggar, Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum and Mat Staver.

Closing out Friday night’s session, Jackson attacked supporters of equality and was somewhat confused with his interpretation of "the truth":

“How dare you try to redefine an institution that God himself ordained! The fact of the matter is they can call a union other than one man and one woman by any name they choose but the reality is you can re-write a thousand dictionaries, you can put on a thousand TV shows, you can make a thousand headlines, you can have a thousand coming out parties, you can have a thousand politicians affirm the lie, but the truth will still stand and a thousand years from now, marriage will still be a union between one man and one woman because God ordained it so!"

Rachel Maddow Blasts NOM's Collaboration with Russia on Anti-Gay Laws: VIDEO

Maddow

Rachel Maddow last night launched into a condemnation of Russia's anti-gay adoption laws, and the country's next plan: to take children away from gay parents.

Maddow then looks at the anti-gay American activists that are throwing their full approval behind what Russia is doing - wingnuts like Bob Van Der Plaats, Bryan Fischer, and, more specifically, NOM's Brian Brown, who, as Towleroad has reported, traveled to Russia to collaborate with lawmakers there in support of the anti-gay laws.

Brown has been accused of violating the U.S. Logan Act by making this trip.

Maddow then makes note of Brown's scheduled speech today at the Values Voter Summit, and the top-level Republicans that are offering their blessing to this anti-gay collaborator.

This Year's Anti-LGBT Speakers At The Values Voter Summit Are...

Values Voter Summit

I suppose it would be glib, however accurate, to say, "All of them," but Media Matters highlights some of the more notorious homophobes, many of whom we have covered before.

Speakers at this year's conference include:

Ben_carsonBen Carson - a "conservative hero" who compared gay marriage to NAMBLA and was subsequently forced to step down as a commencement speaker at Johns Hopkins University, despite his backpedaling attempts to apologize.

Jerome Corsi - a Tea Party wingnut and World Net Daily writer who claimed that Obama was "gay married" to his Harvard Pakistani roommate, and issued the usual slew of nonsense about gay marriage leading to polygamy, pedophilia, etc. Rachel Maddow had fun picking his conspiracy theories to pieces.

Mike Huckabee - Governor Huckabee has never been a friend of the gays, but in recent news he slammed the Supreme Court for striking down DOMA, used his Fox News show to lie about transfolk, and is trying to start up an anti-gay alternative to the Boy Scouts called Trail Life USA.

Todd Starnes - the Fox News commentator doesn't seem to like anyone, but especially not Obama and tried to twist the President's support for gay Olympic athletes to him imposing a litmus test and why can't he just support all of our athletes like a real American?

Cal Thomas - a Fox News pundit who snidely commented that Rachel Maddow is herself an argument in favor of contraception, but actually had the sense to realize years ago that the fight against gay marriage was a losing one. He still thinks it's an indicator of the ruin of civilzation, though.

Allen West - the vile former Florida Congressman claimed that anti-gay workplace discrimination doesn't exist, defended calling homosexuality a chosen behavior, and fired an intern for being pro-gay. Naturally, he is now a Fox News contributor.
